Ear piercing of babies, what do you think?

Sometimes i think i live in a romany gypsy camp the number of babies i see with pierced ears and jewellery dangling from their little wrists. Having never adopted the courage to get my own ears pierced, i cant imagine piercing a little baby's ears. Its brutal and so common! What gives with this practice? In my opinion, its mutilation. The dangling bracelets are a health hazard to little ones, and i fear they could break their arms if they got them tangled in their sweaters.

What gives with this?

God what a mad family. It's the sort of thing that you expect to happen in a sitcom, not in RL.

Ear piercing on babies? Why not smack them to discipline them too?

I think both is child abuse, in my opinion, and piercing is worse than smacking. Why would anyone want to make holes in their baby?

Aimsmum - Pure class eh?

Ds got an Everton strip when he was older (2-3yrs) and sat with DH both wearing the tops watching an Evertone v Liverpool match! Sooooooooo funny! Then ds decided he didn't like the feel of it an THANKFULLY never wore it again.

Toothache · 01/04/2005 23:52

Evertone??

moondog · 01/04/2005 23:57

HOW TF HAVE I MISSED THIS??? IT'S HILARIOUS!!!!
(Ok, calmed down now.....wetting myself at the babe with the signet ring, mad baldy girls with bows,Irish jigger with streaks and pierced nails (or am I merging two stories? ) baby being snuck out of the house to be disfigures as a surprise.....unbelievable.

Where's that chav quiz lm? At the beginning of this thread?

My most hated thing is little tiny baby boys in trainers, baseball caps and jeans. Hideous!!
Ds only wears cream babygros and home knitted cardigans....

turnupthebass · 01/04/2005 23:58

now if they'd been wearing a Liverpool strip it could all have all been so much better.........

Bugger, will have to do it tomorrow. Dh arriving imminently and I want to be in the boudoir to welcome him home after 8 weeks apart..

I refused to let my kids have their ears pierced till they are old enough to ask and look afer them. A bit strange considering the amount of piercings I have myself, 12 in my ears, tho, only 6 are still open, my nose, my tonugue, my belly and I had my upper lip pierced last week. I also have 3 tattoos, dead common me!!! I am a punk chick so its goes with the image

Ohhhh LOL at this thread this morning.

JoolsToo · 02/04/2005 09:03

if anyone had whipped my baby away to have her ears pierced - family or no - they'd have been out the door pronto and the ear-rings would be out and in the bin!

Pinotmum · 02/04/2005 12:15

I really wouldn't be surprised if my SIL did this to my 4 yo dd. When we last visited them in Glasgow she said dd would have to come and stay over one night and get her ears pierced, followed by a laugh (witchy cackle more like) but I think she was serious. I'd beat her to a pulp but there is more chance of snow in Barbados that dd staying over night at her house . She's the one with the irish jigger with pink hair extensions, false suntan, false tallons, peirced nose and belly button ring at 14 yo. However I am thankful they haven't yet sent the family tartan - Celtic football strip for dd and ds to wear. Does that make me a snob?

Caligula · 02/04/2005 12:23

PMSL Pinotmum. I think your best defence is to say how you would sue for assault if anyone did it - that might concentrate their minds. I still think I might be tempted to tbh. I can't imagine how anyone can think it's acceptable to have another person's child pierced without their permission.

And I also don't understand why shops are allowed to do this - in a family situation, you might not want to sue for assault, but I wonder if there is any mechanism for complaining about the shop? Granted, normal people don't generally kidnap children in order to have bits of them pierced, so perhaps it's OTT to expect them to demand birth certificates and ID in these situations, but if tattoo shops can demand proof of permission, I don't see why piercing shops shouldn't. And it would sure embarrass the family - they wouldn't be able to go back to the shop to get their other bits pierced!

Blossomhill · 02/04/2005 12:28

I think ear piercing in babies looks awful, really cheap. Whose benefit is it for??? They are not possessions, let them be babies ffs!
Personally I won't even let my nearly 6 yr old have her ears done. I just don't like it!

jessicasmummy · 02/04/2005 12:29

nasty horrible yukky

Miaou · 02/04/2005 12:50

OMG I am 3% chav! I have a PAYG phone and have bought tinned corned beef, that's all....so does that make me a snob, I wonder?

Pinotmum · 02/04/2005 12:54

I'm sorry but you can't be a snob if you eat tinned corned beef , tinned spam perhaps, now that's class

serenity · 02/04/2005 14:48

DD can get her ears done when she asks for it long enough. I'm in the minority at the school gates though. Most other mums I know had their DDs done at about 6 months. However, just because I don't agree with them doesn't mean I'm going to post a load of bitchy, trashy, common bile like a lot of others on this thread. Shame on you. I'm only hoping that it was a big April fools thing to come over as a load of screaming fishwives.
