feel like I've only just got my head around the what not to eat in pregnancy list but had prob better start learning the what not to eat whilst BFing list now so I have a bit of a clue when the baby comes.

All I know so far is that I will have to stop taking probiotics

will I be allowed pates and things like that again?

I don;t think there's anything you shouldn't eat while you're bfing, tbh. I bf ds2 for 2 years and ate an entirely normal diet.

Very, very occasionally a baby could be intolerant to dairy or something in your diet and you may have to cut that particular thing out but that's only a tiny chance. There's no point in avoiding things on the off chance.

The only thing I limited myself on was alcohol, obviously. I still had occasional odd glasses and as he got older and went longer between feeds I had more than an odd one .

Oh, and I've never heard about the probiotics. What's the reasoning behind that?

babyOcho · 14/01/2009 14:22

I've never heard of the probiotics thing. What's that about?

You should eat and healthy and varied diet. I didn't/still do not cut things out of my diet. Some say in the early days that spicy food upsets their DC, but I never had any problems.

I guess what I am saying is eat what you would, and only cut things out if you think that its impacting your DC

Here you go. Have it from the horse's mouth. The whole of that site is fab for research based bf advice so it's well worth a read if you've got time. Pre-arm yourself against the rubbish the mws and hvs will spout at you .

SalBySea · 14/01/2009 21:02

that site is just adding to my confusion - at the top it says there is no list of foods that you cant have when BFing, but down near the bottom of the page it says that there are some types of fish that nursing mothers should completely avoid??????

Dont know where I heard the probiotic thing TBH

You wouldn't stop eating joghurts so no need to stop using probiotics. I always gave my DD probiotics when she was ill and she recovered much faster.

SalBySea, it might be an idea to post this again in the breast and bottle feeding section. There are some breastfeeding experts hang out there.

There is an excellent website called kellymom.com.

Here is the page about breastfeeding and diet

This explains more about the mercury thing.

TBH, unless you eat huge amounts of sushi, shark swordfish and tile mackerel your risk is negligable.

If you're really concerned then avoid tuna too but ordinary, everyday white fish isn't going to pose any kind of risk at all.

Dr Jack Newman cites dietary restrictions as one of the many ways that people try to overcomplicate breastfeeding leading to women giving up before they want to.

Have a look at his breastfeeding myths - it's a really useful list. In fact, bookmark his site and there are some great videos on latch and solving common, and not so common, problems that may come in handy later on.

(I also bf for 14 months and didn't cut out anything from my diet, including the odd glass of wine.)
