Watching this with interest as DD is 1 on 29th Jan and got loads for Xmas too

emkana · 11/01/2009 23:16

I would just buy him clothes if he needs them, or something else practical, and my one little toy to the value of no more than £ 5. He doesn't actually need presents at this age.

brimfull · 11/01/2009 23:16

as he's only one I woulld just get him some nice books or maybe something nice for his room ,like a little child's chair

he won't notice anywya

my ds was one on the 27th. We bought him a ride on train when blooming marv did 70% off, a pop up tunnel (his fav present), fire engine and puzzles.

EyeballsintheSky · 11/01/2009 23:19

DD's 1st birthday was yesterday and she got mostly clothes and vouchers. I got her a M&P Lotty Ladybird rocker (reduced from £50 to £20!!) and a few books. I know there'll be things I want to buy her during the year so it's a token present at the mo and then something more exciting in the summer, a slide or something.

mum2samandalex · 11/01/2009 23:22

hmmm thats what i was thinking of doing perhaps wating for new stock etc to come in too as there doesnt seem very much in the shops at the moment. Ans i would love to buy more stuuf when weathers nicer and whens walking its a long year to wait i still feel a bit mean though lol

3 suggestions: 1) Buy something for the summer (eg paddling pool, pop up tent) 2) buy him something little and put the rest into savings account (v sensible, I know) 3) buy something little to unwrap and buy an "experience" like going to the zoo or baby swimming lessons or something he would enjoy. And don't worry about it, us January babies never expect much for our birthdays. Hope he has a lovely day!

gigglewitch · 11/01/2009 23:41

my ds1 is a new-year baby, was 8 last week.
For his first b/day we got him a clock and a set of bunnykins crockery
may sound saddo but he still loves the clock - had to put new batteries in it today - and obv the crockery has been in constant use (once he got over the throw-your-plate baby phase)

Hadeda · 12/01/2009 11:51

My DD was one on 5 Jan. We got her a new jacket as she needed one, but for her the "real" present we asked all her family to write a short message to her or a memory they have of something during her first year. I'm going to put them in a scrap book together with her birthday cards and a collage of photos we've had printed. She just had so much stuff from Christmas that it seemed ridiculous to buy her more, and we thought this is something she can keep for the future. Of course, it won't work next year when she's more aware of her birthday

Goober · 12/01/2009 11:54

Clothes.
A keepsake type thing jewellery, goblet suchlike.
First bed stuff.
Baby swing for using in the garden in spring.

Lionstar · 12/01/2009 11:54

Seriously at that age they really won't notice. Don't get them even more toys - just re-brand some of the xmas ones as birthday. Or give them a big empty cardboard box.

Lionstar · 12/01/2009 11:55

Sorry meant that as a big cardboard box to play in, not just empty to disappoint them

i second something for the summer. my dd will be 3 on the 24th jan. She usually gets clothes ( in the sales) or money.... which is not exciting for her really... ive got her a few token things to open, then am going to find a nice picture of a big slide and tell her when the weather is nicer she can have it. Works quite well i think

GypsyMoth · 12/01/2009 18:43

ELC have their summer toys in now...well ours does!! my ds is 1 on march 2,i plan to buy him the little tikes
cosy coupe car,as all my other 2 ds and 2 dd's have all loved them. or the little tikes railroad mountain road and train set (argos £19.99) is brilliant for years and years of play. got it for my neice for xmas...all my older dc's still play with it too. think its 18 months plus though. but a good buy for later.

ThingOne · 12/01/2009 18:46

Buy something you were going to get anyway - like pjs, boots or groovy toothbrush and something small for the summer.

My DS1 was born just before Christmas and we got him virtually nothing for his first birthday. But he didn't have an older brother to mind about these things.

duckyfuzz · 12/01/2009 18:55

nothing - wait another 6 months, spread it out
