Hi,

This is cheeky but please dont think i am trying to be - honest im not!

I've posted before about the cotton bottoms nappies we have. They are old (5 yrs) and we've been having hurrendous problems with them - they leak like theres no tomorrow. They have the cotton prefold fabric pieces that you fold like in the bambino mio ones. I cant work out whether i have a baby that simply wees too much or whether the cotton liners that i have are just crap! They are the originals. I've looked into trying to get a couple of inserts to try but you have to buy big packs and i really cant afford to buy them when i dont know if its going to work for us.

Does anyone out there have a couple of these prefolds that work well and would be willing to accept a donation for them? In kinda a "try before i buy" theory! I desperately want to use re-usables and its p'ing me off going through all of these disposables!

Hope you dont mind me asking!

Thanks

Nothing I can pass on, I'm afraid (I am already using borrowed washables) but I found that a fleece insert helps. I bought a cheap piece of fleece and cut my own.

I'd suggest fasten them on with Nappi Nippas - that'll hold the nappy really close, and minimise the opportunity for wee to run down the leg and out rather than soak in.
(Lay with tramlines ruunning towards you, fold up a bit at the front, then fold the sides in over the centre panel (fold in along the tramlines) tucking one side into the other at the front to make a pad. Then fan the back out, pop baby on, bring tghe pad up between the legs at the front, wrap the sides round the waist and secure with a Nappi Nippa - make sure it's a Y not a T when on so it hold securely.

If that doesn't work, then it could either be:
wrong size wraps - if near the top or bottom of the weight range could be they fit but don't fit properly.
worn out wraps - after 5 years of use they may simply be worn out

For either of the 2 above I'd suggest replace the wraps, something like the Prorap is designed for prefolds, robust and long lasting, a good price and works very well

Alternatively:
wrong size prefolds - not absorbent enough
heavy wetter - not absorbent enough
prefolds are quite thin after heavy use - not absorbent enough
If any of the above 3 things then
you could try a different size prefold or add a booster - pop the booster betweeen nappy & wrap so the nippa'd on prefold fits best, and the booster helps push the nappy closer to baby to help it absorb more quickly.
If you need more prefolds, try googling 'prefolds' and you'll find cheaper brands than Bambino Mio, that are also sold singly rather than in packs, or try looking on parenting forums nappy sales pages or asking on eg Freecycle. Lots of people buy birth to potty packs of these and don't realise to prevent leaks of runny newborn poo you really need to use a Nappi Nippa (because it's not mentioned in the instructions) and then ditch the whole set.
