Is five miles too far for a four year old?

It would be quite rough terrain, fell walking - i.e. not a flat pavement. Do you think this is too far for quite a delicate, skinny four year old or should he be able to cope at this age? Also bearing in mind it will be very cold. Would you attempt this walk or is he too young - there is no real option to cut the walk short if he is struggling. Please let me know what you think.

Ds1 could, at 2.7 years cheerfully walk 4-5 miles - if he was in the mood. So, if your LO is used to walking I can't see why he couldn't do it.
Could you take the back pack anyway and pop him in for a bit if hr needed a rest?

I don't think I could do this and I'm 21!

I think that he should be able to do it-fell walking is more interesting than pavement walking. Mine did a lot, they were up in the fells in slings at a few months old so didn't suddenly do it. I should just be sure that you can cope with him if he can't (or won't) go on.

Mine could/can.
She walks 2 miles each week to a drama lesson...which is a good incentive to get there, then she walks home smartish to get a piece of cake.

It's good exercise for both of us.

fwiw we took our DTs up a steep but not too long hil yesterday, they all but ran up there, it seems hills are far more interesting than easier but longer walks!

Give up driving anywhere less than 4 miles away, you will both get so fit so quickly!!!!!

I did this as: I hate driving, I hate parking, I was told I would never walk long distances again...so decided to prove them wrong...so if I can do it with my DD, anyone can.

ds is just five and can do up to 7 miles, this can be on rough terrain or up hills. He is also a skinny child!

We do walk a lot together though.
