DTs Won't sleep in cot - HELP!!

Everytime we try to put twins in a cot they start screaming - whether they are together or seperate. We have a cot mobile but that has not helped, mirror. The minute we pick them up they go to sleep in our arms. They are spending the night in our bed and it is getting a bit crowded.

I know they are only 5 days old, but I have never had this problem before with my older 2, and any suggestions would be appreciated.

wrap them in a tshirt you've been wearing, and lay them down slowly. The theory is the smell of you soothes them.
Or maybe the cot is too big for them, and they don't like the open space, so to speak?! How are they in carry cot/pushchair/pram? Worth trying a Moses basket?

How about those little bolster cushions that are meant for stopping them from rolling over? Maybe they'll feel more secure.

Have you got a moses basket? If so they may do better to start there. I'm not convinced that they like the huge amount of space. Are you laying them next to each other or end to end? Have you tried swaddling them?

I know what you mean about a crowded bed.

Thanks for the advice, it was the amount of space that was upsetting them. We managed to evict them from our bed last night by laying them in a laundry basket each!!! We put these inside their cots, so hopefully they will get used to the cots before they outgrow the baskets.

we put ours in a moses basket inside the cot. Though laundry baskets sound as though they are doing the trick! lol

quick question though.......how the hell do you manage to get 2 empty laundry baskets with 4 kids in the house?!?!?

I used to put a hot water bottle in the moses basket when I lifted DS out for a feed (well, got DH to get the hot water bottle actually - figured he could do something while I was awake feeding instead of snoring!). Then when we put him back, his bed was toasty (obviously took the hottie out first!) and the cool bedclothes didn't wake him up.

Just don't tell your midwife/HV! We camped for a week with ds when he was 4 months old, and he slept in a baby sleeping bag in a suitcase. When we came home he would not settle in his cot until we put the suitcase inside for him! I thought this was funny, and mentioned it to the HV, (who obviously had had the mandatory sense of humour bypass), who said "I can't approve of that. What about a safety mattress?"

AFter 2 nights he was back in the cot without the offending suitcase.

We had our twins together in one carry cot to begin with.

Definitely agree babies don't like a lot of open space around them, and seem to like being wrapped up fairly securely.

We have the twins together during the day, but seperate them at night and swaddle them so they sleep better.
They are settling a bit better, I've had to introduce more bottles, as feeding two babies every two hours proved impossible. It's frustrating, cos I've got the milk but it goes straight through them and they get hungry again so quick. I have to keep expressing it and have a fridge full of the stuff!
My midwife sawthem yesterday, and wasn't impressed by the baskets neither, but I told her it was better than having two babies in our bed. I'm hoping they will go back in the cots soon tho, Ravi's basket dosn't have a lot of growing room!

stick with it Kelly - it will get better. They will start to space out their feeds better soon.

I ended up expressing for mine for 9 months because they never figured out how to latch on.

Wow that's good, I didn't think it was possible to express milk for that long and keep the supply going.

Aww kelly best of luck with the expressing I did it for a singleton for 9 and a bit months before getting preg again and it was enough to almost drive me crazy! How sweet they must look in their little baskets, I hope they get used to their cot asap!

it is possible but I wouldn't recommend it .

Much better if you can get them feeding from you directly.

They will feed directly, which is nice, but when I feed both at the same time it does make me feel like a milking machine!

don't worry kelly, it all settles down soon. I remember that constant feeding so clearly. I went away without the DTs (and anyone else for that matter) and I was throwing away 24-30oz at a time (all expressed obviously).

Don't be pressured by your mw/hv, but do do what works for you.

Oooow, no way!!
We've actually had a couple of good nights with just two feeds at night so I'm happy! Just hope it lasts for a bit.
