Would you continue or postpone?

Sorry, this is my 3rd message on this board .

I decided to try to properly potty train dd this weekend as I have 4 solid days home with her. She's 2 1/2 and has been able to wee and poo on the potty and occasionally the toilet since she was just turned 2. She's been ok these last few days when she's at home and in her knickers, but the moment she's in more clothes or we pop out somewhere she totally forgets and just goes in her clothes. I'm also concerned that she seems to need to still do quite small quite frequent wees. So I can get her to wee on the potty before we nip out but after an hour or less on one occasion she'll do another wee in her clothes.

What do you think? Should I postpone or continue? She's only had 5 wee accidents in total since Friday morning when we started, and has done all her poos at home on the potty. I'm in no mad rush to train her but at the same time don't want to miss the opportunity if she's ready.

Great idea, I'm going to try that one, for ds not me (well maybe . He's back to playgroup tomorrow so perhaps seeing the other boys using the toilet will be encouraging. Clutching at straws now as getting desperate .

mummylonglegs · 04/04/2005 09:50

Good luck! I hope he does ok today. Are there many staff around to help? How long is he there for?

I wimped out and sent him in pull ups. They had quite a few new starters so I don't think they would of noticed his wee wee dance. The pull ups were dry when I got him home, maybe a little widdle. He's still having accidents this morning though. At one point he was standing almost next to the potty and I said do you need the potty ... and he said No and then wet himself there and then [exasperated emoticon]. However, on the plus side he got up this morning before me and went to the potty and did a huge poo so that's great news. He only goes twice a week to play group for 2.5 hrs per session. I really want to send him in pants but just don't want him wet through the minute I leave. I'm just going to have to do it aren't I? How's your dd? {smile]

Yes, I think you are going to have to do it. Can you make sure he has a wee the moment you leave him there? And tell all the staff the signs to look out for? I'm in a similar situation with dd who goes to a childminder 2 mornings a week, one for 3 1/2 hours, the other 2 1/2 hours. The longer one is easier as there's just 1 other girl there with dd and it's quiet but the shorter day is with a very boisterous boy so they usually have to go out. I haven't sent her for that day yet as haven't been sure she'd cope without major accidents.

Dd's doing really well although I'm so nervous to say that after last Friday's major weeing all over the place extravaganza! I know exactly what you mean about them standing by the potty, being asked, refusing, then wetting themselves. What's the point for them in doing that I wonder?

Very strangely last night dd stayed dry all night. I'm sure it's a fluke because the day before she'd weed so much in the night it had leaked all over her pajamas. I was surprised though because she'd had a massive drink of milk before bed.

A few people on here have said potty training resulted in night dryness so you never know. My dd wasn't night dry till a year after being day trained but then I wasn't too fussed about night dryness as I thought she may get up to have a wee and wander round the house waking us all up . I've just returned from Tesco's and ds actually asked in the car for his potty and held on till I positioned it in the car park. He CAN do it when he wants to which I think is more frustrating than knowing he just isn't capable yet iykwim. I think I'll speak to the play group supervisor as you suggested

mummylonglegs · 05/04/2005 22:30

From everything you've described I'm SURE your ds is capable. When I attempted to train dd when she was just turned 2 (and very keen herself, I thought it was too early), she clearly wasn't ready. I think they can get quite forgetful and also a bit rebellious!

I don't know if you've noticed this with ds, but I think dd is quite anxious about it all in her own odd way. She's still yet to do a wee or poo in front of anyone but me and dp and she does seem to worry about 'messing herself', even at night. Tonight it took me AGES (1.5 hours ) to settle her down to sleep as she was convinced she needed a poo but couldn't do anything every time she tried. She got incredibly upset by the end. Not nice.

MLL, how's it all going? Ds is much more reliable and has filled his pasta jar which earned him a ride on Bob the Builder outside Sainsburys . However he did wet himself in the car as I was getting the stroller out of the boot so I'm not popping corks just yet. Hope your dd is coming on in leaps and bounds

Hi Pm, I've been away at my mums over the weekend.

Dd's doing really well still at the moment. We haven't had an accident now since over a week ago. But we haven't been out and about still all that much. She seems to be able to hold on for a very long time, either that or she doesn't drink enough! Today she did a wee at 11am when we left moms. We didn't get home until nearly 5pm and she didn't do a thing the whole journey!! And when she did it wasn't that big. Strange ...

She is having some poo anxieties though, mainly at bedtime. She keeps saying she's worried about doing a poo in her sleeping bag. It must have sunk in deep all this potty business because she's been mostly dry at night for about 5 nights too now!

To be honest, it's all a bit of a mystery to me ...

Your dd is doing really well I hope this poo anxiety passes soon for her and she relaxes a little more about it. My ds went to play group today with proper pants on and stayed dry. I spoke to the supvr and she said she'd look out for the signs he needed to go. In fact he's had an accident free day today and I hope this may be the start of a more reliable phase. Your dd being accident free for 1 week is great news. I bet you're glad you continued now?

mummylonglegs · 11/04/2005 21:54

Hurray for your ds, Pm!! And well done for sticking to your guns with the pants at playgroup.

I started another thread about dd's poo anxieties as it's been getting a bit out of hand. It's a real shame as in all other ways she's doing so well with it. I hope it turns out to be just another one of those odd little 'phases' ...

Well, partly I guess. I think I was much more patient and less stressed this time than when I tried when she was just gone 2.

Hi MML just thought I would let you know that dd had a tiny poo on the potty today. Hurray

Then I took in the washing because it was going to rain and when I get back in she's saying "toilet" and has just done her poo in her pull ups.

Never mind she is doing well apart from that and I wanted to let you know.

mummylonglegs · 11/04/2005 23:16

Well done Shazzler.

You know, I keep thinking, when they're older they'd be so embarrassed to know we spoke so openly about their poo and wee habits!

OP posts:
Shazzler · 11/04/2005 23:20

I agree MLL. In a few years we will be wondering why we were so stressed and be worrying about something else.

I can't even remember much about my ds potty training, he was a similar age that dd is now. He's now 5 and has had no problems for years.

Time flies.

mummylonglegs · 12/04/2005 13:56

Yes, I can imagine that, Shazzler. Dd's my only child but already I wonder now why I got so stressed about weaning and other things I did over a year ago!

I wish I knew about MN when I had my ds! Might have coped better/

misdee · 13/04/2005 13:46

hows it going mummylonglegs?
dd2 is doing great when she is naked on her bttom half, but as soon as we put knickers on then she wets them or in yesterday case sits on the potty still wearing them.

she did wanty her nappy off straight away this morning and sat on the potty which is good.

but am desperate to venture out further with her.

mummylonglegs · 13/04/2005 14:55

Hi misdee

It's going very well with dd, no 'accidents' for a good couple of weeks now I think and she's been somewhat miraculously dry all night for almost a week too. I'm slightly concerned she isn't drinking enough and also there's poo anxieties at bedtime which may be a ruse or may be a genuine fear of 'pooing in my sleeping bag'!

How old's your dd2? She's pretty much the same age as mine if I remember? I think the transition from bare bottom to knickers / trousers has to happen, however fraught, as they have to learn they don't like to wet their clothes. Though the first time we trained dd when she was just turned 2 she never really got that aspect which is why I postponed until 2 1/2 and it's been much better this time.

How's your dh doing now? I keep looking out for threads on him but haven't seen anything for a while ...
