Would you continue or postpone?

Sorry, this is my 3rd message on this board .

I decided to try to properly potty train dd this weekend as I have 4 solid days home with her. She's 2 1/2 and has been able to wee and poo on the potty and occasionally the toilet since she was just turned 2. She's been ok these last few days when she's at home and in her knickers, but the moment she's in more clothes or we pop out somewhere she totally forgets and just goes in her clothes. I'm also concerned that she seems to need to still do quite small quite frequent wees. So I can get her to wee on the potty before we nip out but after an hour or less on one occasion she'll do another wee in her clothes.

What do you think? Should I postpone or continue? She's only had 5 wee accidents in total since Friday morning when we started, and has done all her poos at home on the potty. I'm in no mad rush to train her but at the same time don't want to miss the opportunity if she's ready.

if your DD now dislikes nappies then you are on the right track for sure, as that means she does'nt feel under any pressure & is perfectly happy with the training. She obviously wants to learn.

mummylonglegs · 27/03/2005 22:26

2-3 weeks isn't bad. How old were yours when you trained them LM?

Dd's at a childminder 2 mornings a week and she's got no experience of potty training so I'm expecting a few disasters there.

Yes, tiffini, I think she is keen despite getting despondent when she has an accident. She's not too happy to have a nappy on at bed time or nap time.

I would continue as well because she can only get better with time. My dd is 18mths and mostly asks for the toilet for wees. Poos are another matter though She had a couple of bad experiences but I have worked out roughly when she needs to go so put pull ups on for that time.

I know what you mean about going out in the sun. Have you tried a portable potty? I used one for my ds and seemed to work well when out and about.

ladymuck · 27/03/2005 22:31

2.5 (had a brief go at 2.2 but after 6 accidents in day I decided that we weren't ready ). Hence why I feel that you sound as if you're going very well! Especially with the results at home.

mummylonglegs · 27/03/2005 22:32

Yes, I did get a portable one, but dd doesn't like that plastic bag affair that goes over the edges.

Gosh, 18 months is early. Although I have met a couple of mums with girls they trained at that age very successfully.

LM, I had a brief go when dd turned 2 and first started using the potty. But she basically NEVER went unless I took her and it started to be quite a battle so I decided to wait 6 months more. I don't really want to postpone it again but then I'm a bit lazy and think life's too short for angst and who cares if it happens when she's 3?

I was just thinking that if you always remind them, how do they learn to know when they need to go for themselves?

Off to bed now. Thanks for everyone's advice!

After a couple of weeks then you start to prompt them less and less. You enthusiatically reward them whenever they go to the toilet on their own initiative. It's a huge thing for them to learn (how to listn to their body, when to go, where to go, how to go, how to wipe, fluch and wash etc), and you need to help them in little steps.

Your dd sounds as if she is ready, and she is doing really well IMO. But you need to be careful not to expect too much from her or else you may discourage her.

Mummylonglegs, contemplating whether to take ds out in pants or pull ups today. He's been bare bum all morning and no accidents. When I did dd we basically were house bound for 4 or 5 days but I just can't do that this time so I'll have to make a decision soon. How's your dd today?

mummylonglegs · 28/03/2005 15:09

Dd's done really well today, though we've been home the whole time in knickers. She's told me every time she needs a wee and got to the potty in time! I've been invited to a friend's this afternoon and she loves going there, it's only up the road too, not sure whether to go or not and how to reconcile my friend to the possibility of wee or worse on the floor!

How did you get on Pinotmum?

OP posts:
Pinotmum · 28/03/2005 15:13

Still going Ok (fingers crossed). He's still bare bummed and is making it in time for wees and poo(s). Haven't actually gone out as dh still at work. If I do go out I'm bringing a potty . Hope I haven't junxed anything by being so positive [paranoid emoticon]

Pinotmum · 28/03/2005 15:14

or even JINXED anything (god my typing is poor)

mummylonglegs · 28/03/2005 15:17

Yes, I worry about Jinxing too .

So, does he just tell you when he needs a wee and then go? Dd usually gets a startled face, grabs herself and says 'oh! I need a wee!' and then rips her knickers off and sits down super-quick, staring at me all the time until a small smile passes over her face and she says 'I did a wee!' Her poos are really quite frighteningly quick. I think she wanders around until the last minute because by the time she sits on the potty, it falls out within about 3 seconds. It's that bit I truly dread happening when we're on a busy bus in central London ...

Yes, fishy one, I've decided for now to stick with it. It seems too much work to turn back.

OP posts:
Pinotmum · 28/03/2005 16:34

He just does a dance holding onto himself and I have to say go to the potty. I am reminding him to go and he is being a bit defiant but I'm sticking to it.

mummylonglegs · 28/03/2005 21:00

I stayed home in the end as dd unexpectedly came down with a high fever this afternoon. Since then she's eaten nothing and only had tiny sips of liquid but even still managed some tiny wees on the potty. Tomorrow she's with dp, wonder how that will go ...

Pinotmum · 28/03/2005 21:05

Put a pair of track pants on ds and went into the garden. He came back in soaking wet. Don't think I can take him out to Tesco's naked from the waist down so still some work to do there. Hope your dd's feeling better tomorrow.

mummylonglegs · 28/03/2005 21:28

Thanks Pm. How long was he in the garden for? Did you get him to wee beforehand? What's shocked me about dd so far when she's had an 'accident' it's been quite close to when she's just done a wee on the potty. Nothing you can do about that is there? You can't stick them on the potty every 10 minutes can you? Plus then, other times, she seems to be able to go 2 hours between wees. Seemingly regardless of how much she's had to drink?!

OP posts:
mummylonglegs · 29/03/2005 20:47

Wow! Dd spent the day with dp today and had not a single accident!! And she even said she needed a wee a couple of times when she had her trousers on ...

Shazzler · 29/03/2005 21:28

Great news.

All your hard work is paying off.

mummylonglegs · 29/03/2005 21:36

I really do hope so! She's so proud of herself at the moment. Tomorrow it's the first morning with the childminder who's never dealt with potty training before .

OP posts:
mummylonglegs · 30/03/2005 15:03

How's it going Pinotmum? Dd went to childminder today and she didn't do anything the whole time (3 hours!) until I arrived and then she sat instantly on the potty and did an enormous wee ... good to know she can hold it in so well, but I wonder why? Could she be shy?!

Pinotmum · 31/03/2005 19:04

Hi MLL, ds has been in pants since yesterday and today we went to the Zoo and he insisted on pants not pull ups. I brought several changes of clothes plus portable potty and he was fine. He even asked to sit on his potty. However on the journey home (1 hour+ as traffic terrible) he wet himself but I would have been surprised if he hadn't tbh. He seems great to begin with but as the day wears on he has an accident or two. This could be because he has also dropped him nap and is getting tired by 6 pm. Your dd sounds like she's cracked it though. How did she go today.
