What music do you listen to in the car when with DC's?

Just wondering as my friend was moaning today about ALWAYS having a nursery rhyme type CD on loop in the car for her 1 year old DS, and I said I put one of them on a couple of times for my DS (also 1 year) but it lasted about 3 songs then the radio went back on or my own CD's! I sing nursery rhymes from time to time but mainly sing along to decent pop / rock music LOL.

DH is a musician so DS has been brought up so far listening to 'normal' music rather than baby stuff. He now bounces in his chair with a huge grin when he recognises daddys band LOL!

So do you think it's fine to keep on 'normal' music on in the car and bypass the baby tunes? Or am I depriving my son or the joys of 'five little ducks went swimming one day'?

I'd be interested to hear what you all listen to!

Whatever dd1 who is 4.5 wants to listen to usually lol.

Never listen to nursery rhymes etc

ATM we (she) likes The Proclaimers,Paulo Nutini, John Mayer and Ryan Adams.

She can fairly belt out Proclaimers "I wanna spend my life with you" lol

thats 'adult voices'!! those cds would drive me mad in the car although perhaps useful if driving a long way although we use the dvd player for long journeys

santasinmywaistband · 15/12/2008 20:16

short journeys in silence as dd 4 always want to chat.
long journeys, dvd player in back me in sort of silence, but lets me concentrate

boogeek · 15/12/2008 20:16

I have never ever put a kiddy CD on in the car! I have a friend who thinks I am very mean (but she drives everywhere to the sound of the wheels on the sodding bus, it would drive me nuts) (ha ha drive, geddit )

Joolyjoolyjoo · 15/12/2008 20:18

We listen to the radio or my CDs, from which the kids now have favourites. I'm trying to train them to have decent taste in real music Although we do have one Disney CD, which has mysteriously made its way into my dad's car.....

wrinklytum · 15/12/2008 20:19

dp alternates between r2 and this weird Dutch rock station we can get in our local area!!

dp very musical also and used to help get ds to sleep by strumming his guitar.

I think all music of any kind is good for children.(Well, possibly not ones with rude words in when they are learning to talk, that could backfire slightly)

My second child has quite severe learning delay and she LOVES music,it was one of the first signs she learned, for music so we could put the radio on for her.I put classic fm on for her at night or else she kicks off.My gut feeling is that she may be a bit of a Rock chick at heart though as she loves said dutch rock station and is particularly partial to the RHCP and the Killers.

NappyXmas · 15/12/2008 20:19

Sadly we made the mistake of buying some nursery rhyme/kids songs CDs when DS was about 12mths. He now demands "my music" whenever we get in the car, and gets hissy if he doesn't hear it.

That said, they keep him really happy on long journeys, and he has picked up loads of language from them, as the lyrics are easier to pick out then some rock/pop songs.

Am going to burn some more "grown up" songs to disc for him (and for my sanity) and try and select stuff that both of us will like, as well as to introduce him to a wider range of musical styles.

bigTillyMint · 15/12/2008 20:20

Heart!

DD knows the words to all the old songs now!

KatieDD · 15/12/2008 20:21

I play short story CD's to mine, they need the nursery rhyme type music to develop their language, so grin and bear it if I was you, you'll reap the rewards when they start learning to read.

That's good to read not everyone is listening to baa baa black sheep all the time in the car! I figure that kids don't know any better so any music is good music eh? DS used to always get to sleep to Pink Floyds Dark Side of the Moon as a newborn , I tried to sing hush a bye baby but don't know the words!

At the moment it is the CD of We will Rock You (remembering to turn down the intro to Somebody to Love when Scaramouche shouts bitch.)

Previously it was Hairspray or Classic FM

ilikeyoursleeves · 15/12/2008 20:26

....and I do often sing nursery rhymes that I know, I just can't bear having to sit and listen to those baby CD's!

At the moment, Abba Gold or Take That (the last album, not the latest one). Makes a change from High School Musical, which was starting to send me slightly batty. It'll all change next week though, when DD1 gets the HSM3 soundtrack for Christmas. Like others, we vowed never to have children's music in the car, although we have spent journeys singing songs with them instead. DD1 spent her first year being lulled to sleep by Nick Drake . Mind you, I went to a Radiohead concert when I was about 34 weeks pregnant with her, so we started her musical education early .

Niecie · 15/12/2008 20:30

I listen to the radio - usually Radio 2 but it does vary or CDs. DH and I have quite eclectic taste in music.

I made a conscious decision never to put on children's music. I am driving - I don't want to be irritated beyond belief by listening to Wheels on the Bus for the 2356967574 time. You know once would never be enough and I am sure my driving would suffer!

On long journeys (over an hour) they listen to story CDs on their personal CD players - a godsend.

Thankfully both DSs have quite sophisticated musical taste as a result. DS1 is soulful, DS2 is a rocker.

IdrisTheDragon · 15/12/2008 20:30

Whatever I want to listen too

SnowballsintheSky · 15/12/2008 20:35

LBC or my stuff. I have bought her a Night Garden cd for Christmas which might get one or two outings if she's really moaning but otherwise hard cheese. This child will be a music fan if it kills me!

NorbertDentressAngel · 15/12/2008 20:39

We've only ever listened to nursery rhymes or story tapes on very long journeys (and then they are an absolute last resort).

Its either Radio 1 or a CD.

Current CD choices are Elbow (my choice), Mark Ronson or Amy Winehouse(DS aged 4 choice) or Lily Allen (DD aged 9 choice)

gemmiereindeerlegs · 15/12/2008 20:43

we have the |Dingle Dange scarecrow CD and a Disney songs collection that I put on whenever I'm feeling really kind dd doesn't much like loud music but ds likes the red HotChiili Peppers, One Night Only, Blur (the WOO HOO song next mummy) and The Killers. We have a Driver's Priviledge rule in our house, if you drive you choose, although i am open to reasonable requests!

tinselroundtherock · 15/12/2008 20:49

I can't listen to the children's cds.

DS listens to the Fleet Foxes, The Killers and the Kings of Leon.

He prefers the Fleet Foxes or 'men singing' as he calls it.

DS is 2.6

noiamnot · 15/12/2008 20:51

2 ds (6 and 10)

We are currently listening to Smashing Pumpkins and Dinosaur Junior.

browntrout · 15/12/2008 20:55

dinosaur junior - now that takes me back!

noiamnot · 15/12/2008 20:59

they were very underated browntrout. Some excellent guitar work (it's an old tape)
