My nappies have gone stinky!

I've a selection of bamboo nappies and they have all gone stinky in the past week or two. I've not changed my washing method and I don't think DS has changed his diet radically so why has this happened and how can I de-stink them? It's only when they are wet BTW. When they are dry they are fine, no problem, but when he pees in them it's really quite pungent. Your help would be appreciated.

Um, I recently switched to ecover from soap nuts. Perhaps will go back to just soap nuts.

Do you find that soap nuts work then? I've used them once or twice but I have my suspicions. What exactly do you do with them, ie how many do you use, and how many times before you throw them away?

broguemum · 03/12/2008 18:46

I find that soap nuts work for me. I started using them mainly because my DCs have extremely dry skin and DD has quite bad eczma. I was suspicious at first as soap nuts do not make your wash smell "clean" as we have been conditioned to expect washing to smell but I have got to used to that and find the smell of washing powder a bit gross now if it is too strong. I put around 6 to 8 soap nuts in a net bag and use them about 6 or 7 times or until they just feel as if they have run out IYSWIM? Soapnuts won't shift stains so I sometimes pre-soak stained stuff or chuck in a bit of ecover bleach. I put a few drops of essential oils in the softener tray to give the wash a bit of a scent if I want it. I have also found that the higher the temperature, the better they wash. HTH!
