Would you pop to the shop when your DC is asleep upstairs?

I wouldn't but after a conversation with some Mums I have started to think I am in the minority.

The shop is a 1 min walk down the road and the DD is child is one year old and asleep in a cot. You need some milk and you know the baby won't wake up for at least an hour or 2. Could be home within 5 mins.

Do you think it is ok to go? I have never done anything like that but it was pointed out to me this morning that it isn't much different to chatting outside with the lady across the road for 5 mins or going out in the garden etc.

What do you think?

I wouldn't do it. I think it's morally wrong. I don't think anything's that urgent, and if I really did need to pop to the shop I'd either ask a neighbour to go for me or I'd ask a neighbour to sit in the house for me. Luckily I have good neighbours.

BitOfFunUnderTheMistletoe · 03/12/2008 10:35

I thinki might pop oh in the scenario the OP mentions actually

I have been out short distances when my eight yr old is asleep in her room if my 12 yr old is up and could call me to come straight back if she needed to. I don't think it makes me a bad mother.

No way. Could be a freak accident - gas explosion, anything. I would never forgive myself.

I have left the baby in his cot and DS1 (nearly 4) asleep on the sofa whilst I ran DD across the road to get her to school safely.

I've also left DD(7 at the time) in the house whilst I've been to the shop, and when the baby is in bed. She knows my mobile number, she knows 999 and she knows the next door neighbour's number.

If anyone 'professional' finds out, you will get a visit from SS. trust me.....

BitOfFunUnderTheMistletoe · 03/12/2008 14:55

Really? I doubt it- they seem to have their hands rather full at the moment.

SH27 · 03/12/2008 15:04

Absolutely not, a house could catch fire in that time or someone could break in.

OrmIrian · 03/12/2008 15:53

Is that one of 'the professionals'? Have they changed careers then?

Anyone from SS who wants to pay a visit is more than welcome. Assuming that they had the time to waste

beanieb · 03/12/2008 15:55

probably - depends on the age.

NoPresentsInVictorianSqualor · 03/12/2008 16:08

Let them come.

Turniphead1 · 03/12/2008 16:13

I have done this a couple of times when my eldest was little (shop directly facing house). My main concern was not getting run over and not getting locked out.

harpsichordcarrier · 03/12/2008 16:15

yes, I might, depending on the circumstances and the level of risk.
I have gone to post a letter when baby asleep to catch the post. always in sight of the house. I have been to fetch the car from the end of the street.
it is a judgment call every time.
I also leave my children with a 14 year old male babysitter. that's the talk ofthe village too I can tell you

Ispy · 03/12/2008 16:19

No, no and no again

NoPresentsInVictorianSqualor · 03/12/2008 16:21

What if your child was quite poorly and needed medicine from the chemist across the road?

MrsSanta · 03/12/2008 18:15

Send somebody else

chloemegjess · 03/12/2008 18:44

Mrs Santa, if you are lucky enough to send somebody else then yes, but I don't think really anybody was talking about a situation where there was somebody else to go?

Not sure where the tea came into it.

The scenario was about getting milk, was it not?

Yes, for the baby to drink when she woke up, and to make lunch.

devoutsceptic · 03/12/2008 18:45

one minute? Yes.

MrsSanta · 03/12/2008 18:48

sorry chloe I thought the OP title said
Would you pop to the shop when your DC is asleep upstairs?
maybe I am mistaken or need new glasses eh.

magnolia74 · 03/12/2008 18:52

I did it once when dd1 (now 13) was a baby and asleep. Shop was round corner. I ran there and back so bloody fast I nearly broke my nech Wouldn't do it again unless I lived above or next door to the shop

I do leave mine with their eldest sister though or now my other girls are older I send them instead

chloemegjess · 03/12/2008 18:55

Yes, as is go to the shop when she is asleep to buy milk, and then she can drink it when she wakes up??

Be it on your own consience, Dc are the most imortant things we own so why neglect them.

But hey ho that life some just dont care as much as others.

Uriel · 03/12/2008 19:00

In answer to the op, no.

devoutsceptic · 03/12/2008 19:08

Oh well Mrs Santa, I'm sure there are aspects of your parenting that I'd think were hopelessly inadequate too.

chloemegjess · 03/12/2008 19:09

MrsSanta, I am not sure who that was aimed at as I had said from the start that I wasn't going to do it, but wanted to know if I was alone as the people I was with when discussing it seemed to think I am mad.

But to say some of the people on here don't care as much for their DC is really unfair.

I have done.

Shop less than 100 meters away, have 3 dogs, DH is often not home for days on end.
