Whinge! whinge! whine! whine! all day. Mixed with boss, boss, boss. Finally, "no, I won't!" when told to pick up her toys, play in her room, etc. V. rude to me & dh, tormenting dd (19 mos) & generally driving us all round the twist. I sent dd to her room (again), she refused to go (again), she screamed at me, had a temper tantrum, etc. So I marched in there & smacked her several times on her jean-covered bottom. Furious with her! Angry with myself for not being able to control my temper. How can a 4 almost 5 yr old behave like a child ten years older? Now ds has decided to have a temper tantrum, too. Dh dealing with it but sometimes weekends can seem so long...

My dd used to drive me crazy too. She is 5 next week and I have found her behaviour has improved a lot lately. Perhaps your dd will become a bit more reasonable soon. Here's hoping for you. And don't worry about the smacked bottom: it sounds as though you gave her plenty of chances.

They are pre-programmed to push our buttons.

I know the anti-smacking brigade will quite possibly be along soon, but I don't think a small smack like that does any harm.

Oh how I understand where you are coming from. My dd is exactly the same age and can push me to the limits as well. Today she insisted on coming to help me at Sainsburys. When we were leaving the car park someone had parked very inconsiderately imo on the zebra crossing to let a passenger out and when I said what a silly place that was to stop in dd said "no it isn't mummy you are not in charge of the car park and they can park there". I told her she would have to get the bus home if she spoke to me like that again and I was indeed in charge so ner!

Pinotmum, you sound as if you have my dd's clone! That's exactly what my dd would say!

As for the anti-smacking brigade (which includes my sainted sister), they can go fly a kite.

One of mine (female of course) got more smacks than the other 3 put together. It sometimes seemed as if it was the only way to break the tension she created and she would usually - eventually! - be much calmer afterwards.

I used to be wracked with guilt later but in the long term it didn't matter. Don't be too hard on yourself, ss. (Have you felt able to give her a cuddle yet?)

Don't worry yourself - she didn't respond to other tactics and a quick smack on the bottom did noone any harm! Not me anyway and I got a few in my time!

NO cuddles. Very unlike me but still cross. Dd is such a manipulator. All sweetness & light when she gets what she wants but a nasty little pill when crossed. Disappointed in her, to say the least. It helps to chat on MN. Thanks.

Yep, sounds like my smackee - nearly 20 now and still like that! (Slowly getting better...I hope...leaving home has helped )
