Do you give your 5 year old (Y1) pocket money?

And if you do, how much do you give them and do you link it into rewarding good behaviour at all? Am thinking of starting to give DD1 a weekly sum, but have no idea how much is reasonable (I was given 1p per year at this age, but 5p won't get her very far ).

I gave both dc's 50p a week at that age.

I never linked it to good behaviour, but if they were really naughty it got stopped for a week.

That sounds mixed up!

I meant that they didn't have to be good to get the money in the first place, (didn't have to do jobs etc). But if they were naughty it would be stopped.

We have just started giving DD pocket money (she is 5). She gets £2 a week. In return she is expected to keep her room tidy (I help her if friends have been round), she gets the knives and forks out for dinner and puts her clothes in the dirty washing. Nothing too much, she is a very helpful little girl anyway. It's more to do with trying to give her an idea of the value of money.

Ds is 8.5 and he gets £2

Dd is 13 and hers has only just stopped being £2. Now she's a teenager, she gets £5 clothes allowance, but she has to buy EVERYTHING she wants out of that, ie. body spray, hair slides etc. The only thing she doesn't have to buy is school things.

Mine have just started getting £2 each. they make their beds, put their dirty clothes i nthe washing and keep their room tidy. They are 6 & 4.

ds started getting pocket money at 5. he, like his sister, is given it after tidying their rooms on saturday but we are clear that we're not paying them to tidy their rooms which is what they should do anyway! our tidying standards aren't v strict.... he gets 50p and his 10yr old sis gets £1. they don't need it and aren't allowed to spend it on sweets so every now and then blow it on crazy bones or other rubbish, but that's fair enough.

we give ours (7 and 5) a pound each. but, er, often forget!

Thank you for your help . I think we'll go with £2 for now, and expect her to do a few chores to 'help' in return.

TBh I do think £2 is a lot for a child that old. My DD has just turned 5 and that is the starting point for pocket money in our family. She gets 50p. Her grandparents slip her £1 from time to time which thrills her beyong measure. The tooth fairy brings anything between 50p and £1. Her 7 year old brother has just gone up to £1 and I'm pretty sure we are completely in line with what all of their class mates get.

If you were to give £2 at 5 you would be very much out of the swing where I am. And there is nowhere to ratchet except upwards!

dd get 50p a week on a friday as long as shes been good. She loves helping anyways, but i think as she get a little older will def ask her to tidy room ect. She doesnt play in her room tbh, and helps tidy toys. Its her choice if she wants to spend on sweets, save some or all. She really good and managed to save enough for a DS game, with a little help from great nanny

For money management practise, we give him money to manage from time to time eg when the fair comes to town, he works out what he is going to spend his euros on.

I give the trio pocket money.
DS is 5 and he gets £1 dd1 is nearly 3 and gets 75p and dd2 is nearly 2 and gets 50p.
We also deduct or add money depending on behaviour etc.
