1st day not going well - DS2 hides to poo/wee

1st day potty training not going too well. DS2 sits for a bit on the potty, gets off, plays. One of us watches like a hawk. Then if we get distracted for more than 20 seconds he goes away somewhere private (the next room) and poos/wees.

We have chocolate buttons ready to reward that first wee/poo in the potty but he's a very late talker and wouldn't understand "if you poo in the potty you'll get a treat" (unfortunately). Or at least I'm not convinced he'd understand it.

Am trying to persuade myself that the taking himself away to poo (he's been doing it for a few weeks)is a positive sign that he really is ready.

Am bribing DS1 to perform a poo on potty and receive choc. button as reward in front of DS2. But then DS2 will be upset if he doesn't get one too.

How old is he?

I have a theory about weeing/pooing if you'd like to hear it?

I think that in our low cerebral cortex, the bit that was left from when people lived in caves, the brain understands that we are v vulnerable because you cannot run away if you are weeing or pooing - so it's best to hide from danger, hence hiding behind the sofa in modern times.

He's 3.2. Your theory makes sense. If he would just hide in the bathroom, we'd have it cracked.

I'd see that as a positive sign actually. Your ds knows that he needs to go, well before he goes. That's fab! My ds1 at the same age, would stand there weeing over his toes and not even notice.

Can you put the potty behind the sofa?

And he might understand about the chocolate. DS1 was a late talker, but once he did start talking, we realised just how much he'd been understanding.

Put the sentence in the right order - "poo in potty, then get chocolate" rather than "I'll give you a chocolate after you use the potty".

still no luck on day 2. managed to catch some wee in the potty this morning. He ran out of the room to do it, as yesterday.

He hasn't pooed all day - usually it's two or three times. Is he holding it in?

This afternoon we found him surrounded by a fresh puddle but the pants and trousers he'd been wearing were on him and bone dry - he must have pulled them down to do it.

So he must be ready.....

oh god this is so bad for my marriage.....

and what if he pulls the pull-ups down if we go to someone's house?
