Troubles with a pre-teen

Can anyone help please? My ds1 is 12, nearly 13 and has recently become even more difficult than usual. He has always been, perhaps, more 'difficult' to deal with than other kids-e.g didn't sleep through the night till he was 6 years old, fussy eater, plenty of tantrums etc- but things have reached an all-time low now. We( his stepdad and I) have had phone calls from school saying he is being disruptive in class, not doing homework, being rude and so on. We have already been into school this term because he has been put on report. Also he is being rude to us, swearing, kicking doors, furniture etc, especially to my husband. He does see his 'real' dad, although his dad will often not come because he can't get a car or some other reason. Things came to a head a couple of days ago (on my 40th brithday, as if the day wasn't bad enough already!!:-)) and I took away all his privileges (mobile phone, iPod etc.)I'm at my wits' end so any help would be great.
