My baby has a black eye

DS was sitting down playing on his foamy mat this evening and toppled over onto his face - he now has a shiner of a bruise underneath his eye and I think he's going to wake up tomorrow with a black eye.

I feel so awful and stupid - I was playing with him at the time and still he managed to hurt himself in front of my eyes.

He cried and I cuddled him which seemed to help, but it sounded so sore and he looked so sad when it happened. He had a bath and went to bed as usual and enjoyed his bedtime feed, I don't think he's concussed and wasn't knocked out by the fall, which happened about 2 hours ago.

What to do? I'm wary of putting any cream on it as it's near the eye and I don't want to make anything worse.

DS is 8.5 months - should have mentioned that before.

How old is your ds? Can you give him some infant ibuprofen to act as an anti-inflammatory and to prevent too much pain from the bruise.

You could wrap up some frozen peas in a towel and hold it gently to his face (near but not on his eye) if he will let you - that should also help with any swelling...

they all do it!, i know its really hard but try not to feel bad, no matter how closely you watch them babies have a way of falling off things or over things, they always bruise where everybodt can see it but 9 times out of 10 they are totally fine and forget about it 10 mins later!

He will be ok!
It's scary but they do bounce quite well! . Although it is easy for me to say that as it's not my DC.
It was an accident, and you never know, he might not get a black eye. Don't blame yourself.

Hi,

You are not the only one! DS was playing on the foam mat thingy yesterday and the hand that was holding himself up slipped and he caught his cheek on one of his toys and today, he has a bruise on his cheek. He howled when it happened but was quite easily consoled so I didn't worry. Then he caught his head today on the bookcase he was trying to haul himself up with! He's also 8.5 months and just discovered crawling a week ago and his new party trick is to haul himself up to standing using whatever is around him... So I am resigned to a few more bruises... You are not alone! Don't feel too bad, they have to learn!

Ax

He's asleep at the moment and don't want to wake him - I should have thought about the Calpol thing though. What a dope - I didn't even think about a cold compress either, was too upset at the time.

I've had a peek at him just now and he's fast asleep, but underneath the eye there's a bruise appearing already. He didn't wince when I stroked his cheek so I don't think anything's broken.

Just a bit of a wail really as feel like the world's worst mummy at the moment.

Thank you angel - that helps a bit!

You are welcome... I do know how it feels. Especially the first time he rolled off our bed (and thank goodness unto carpet!). I seriously considered taking him to A&E! LOL... He was absolutely fine, not even a mark on him.

my dd1 managed to pull a toy rattle off the tray in her highchair which hit her in the eye and resulted in a black eye. she was about 7 months old. i felt awful and i think it looked worse than it was. I swear by ARNICA CREAM you should put it on straight away but you can still put it on later and it relly brings out the bruising but it seems to heal it soo much quicker. i now carry it around with me and also have the pellets too as she is now 3 and can take them. I think at that age you are bound to get a few more knocks and bumps its all part of them being into everything

I know how you feel. DS2 managed to topple his highchair over this evening and he landed on his face. Blood everywhere, a fat lip and big bruise on his nose. I feel awful about it too.
