Maybe just a token present since you can't attend the party.
I did this lately, because I knew the family well, we are good friends.

I would always err on the side of "Oh you shouldn't have" than "Oh, they didn't".

Sounds like you've already made your decision, who cares what the norm is, good for you on being a generous open-hearted type
