Does anyone else have a child like this?

My DS is 3 and 4 months and although sociable and happy, is prone to moodiness and unsociableness (is that a word!!!) too. He is uncomfortable in crowds (but then so am i) and brightens up considerably when home or knowing he is going home. he is a real homebody. I just worry about him sometimes as today we went to a birthday party and he didnt want to join in anything and wanted me to sit with him through eating/playing pass the parcel etc. I am not worried about him in there being something wrong with him, more that he isnt the boisterous full of fun and life toddler/child that i always thought they usually are at this age.He doesnt seem to have fun doing anything we go to anymore, like farm park etc and i feel sad for him that he can't seem to feel the fun for things he used to.

could it be an age thing? or just his personality?

All my 3 children have been/are like that. I used to see the other children running of and having great fun at parties etc but mine would always stay with me, not talk and seem not to have fun.

My middle son is 7 now and I would say in the last year he has begun to loosen up a little. My 5 year old can still be a cling on.

But they love to be at home. I wouldn't worry, all children are different, and he's probably enjoying himself in his own quiet way.

My son's now 4.5 and yesterday let me leave him at a birthday party for the first time. Can't tell you what a massive change that is. I think at 3 it's too soon to say, as you never know and in a year's time he might be ready to step away from you a bit more. If not, well hey it's just who he is. Give him as much confidence as you can, don't push him to do things if he's not ready, and see what happens.

ginseng - my DS is a bit younger than yours, but my response would be that he is little more than a baby and he loves his mum. I would not worry in the slightest.
