dr brown or avent bottles??

we used medela special feeder bottles with ds with expressed milk, new baby due shortly, so i am in planning mode, can't decide if i should try dr brown or use avent bottles which is what ds ended up using after medela?

what worked better for you?

Dr Browns tend to leak if you take them out and about in a changing bag,in my experience.

i found dr browns better for colic but the leaking can drive you a bit mad at times. Avent ones definately leak less.

Yup - Dr Brown brilliant for wind/sicky babies but leaking drives you mad and all those bits to clean ...... can never get as many in the steriliser either.

Plus the avent bottles can be addapted to sippy cups by buying spouts/handles for them later when you want to wean them off the teat.

I preferred the Dr Browns by far. They only leak if milk gets into the central reservoir and you can prevent that if you have a bottle holder in a change bag which keeps them upright.

All the Avents I had leaked badly after a while and when the baby discovered she could push the teats into the bottle (not possible with a Dr Brown) we had several floods, once on a friend's very nice carpet.

And Dr Brown is so much better if you have a colicky baby.

I had full sets of both brands before BPA hit the headlines. Canada banned BPA from plastics used for food and drink.

Anyway, I read the articles on BPA and decided that I did not want the chemical leaching out of the plastic into my baby's milk. Dr Brown's bottles gave some of the highest leaching values of the U.K. bottles tested. I replaced all the plastic bottles with glass ones by Born Free.

It's good to be aware of the BPA issue and make your own informed choice. An NCT link if interested:

I used Avent and MAM and I also tried Dr Brown's (but actually found them the worst as they made my ds gag (too fast for him). MAM is free of BPA and I really liked them - he had the 6oz ones which were ok as it was EBM. The Avent ones were the best but you do now have the BPA issue unfortunately.

Avent are shite- leak everywhere. Both dc have been breastfed with the occasional bottle of ebm. Dd took to Mam teats and bottles, and so did ds, after many expensive attempts to find a teat he would take. They are quite ard to find here though, so I tend to stockpile when I see any. Would also recommend Boots own bottles- never had one leak yet.

would you consider using tommee tippee?

I love this range and babies seem to too!

Dr Browns are such a pain for washing and steralising....my 3 had avent bottles which i loved (until now)

I prefer Dr. Brown bottles - we started with Avent and I found the milk got very bubbly and gave DS bad gas. This doesn't happen with the Browns.

They do have more parts and are more fiddly to clean but we have an Avent steriliser and, with some crafty assembly, you can organise all the bits into it no problem.

Dr Brown were good for wind and colic but bloody leaked ALL THE TIME. Drove me nuts. Avent are also good and don't leak, although we didn't use them until ds was over a year old so past the bad colicky stage.

Used both but prefer Dr Brown (although can leak if not done up tightly or transported totally upright). Better for colic and wind.

My ds2 have really bad reflux so switched from Avent to Dr Brown's until it got over it then had to switch back to Avent as all the Dr Brown's started to crack on the bottoms and leak. They were excellent for the reflux though

i started on avent with both of mine but had to switch to dr browns cos of colic and i found they helped almost straight away. Yes they do leak a little but keep them upright and they are fine and they do there own microwave steriliser now too which was not around with my first.

I had Avent for first two DCs - tried Dr Brown with DC3 but found leaking etc really annoying and DC3 began to reject BF so stopped. Agree with phraedd - now use Tommee Tippee and find swapping between breast and bottle works easily.

I wouldn't go out and buy a whole set. With my first we started with Mam which I bought because I thought they were cute . £30 down the drain when we didn't get on with them.

I think Avent are better, but again wait before buying too many.

Just to suggest, but unsure whether they're still around. When my DS was born he developed awful colic and i used NUK bottles. I got them in superdrug and i swear they stopped the colic. Funny shaped teat, but with a huge air hole to let out excess air. This was 5 years ago so they may not be around, but i found them the best thing ever. Saved my sanity.
