advice on baby's with tied tongue

My DS has tied tongue, he is 9 weeks and we only noticed a week or so ago, it was not noticed at birth, i only noticed because he was feeding aggressively , my GP wasn't to bothered, but i don't want it to affect his speech when he is older, also he savages my nipples when he is feeding

go to bfing support worker and ask for referal for cut. Doesnt take long, my dd2 was missed too and was 3 weeks before cut. If its affecting feeding defo get it done. hth

DH's family all had this. DH had his cut when he was 2.5 and it has affected his speech, not very obviously but I notice that some words are a bit slurred unless he really makes an effort. One SIL had hers done when she was an adult, she's a dr so thought it was something and nothing but it took a week or so to recover and was a much bigger deal than she thought.

OTOH, the brother and sister that had it sorted when they were tiny babies had no problems and it was a very simple job. MIL still peers into 9mo DD's mouth to double check but she doesn't have it, we've looked!

If you are going to do definately do it when small.

With Ds 1 we didn't notice until he was older and he had to have a general anaesthetic.

Ds 2 had his done at 2 weeks by Mervyn Griffiths at Southampton hosp, you can go there privately, even if you are not within the catchment area and the cost is minimal, dd also had hers done.

With all 3 the recovery time was very very small, all were feeding within minutes of having it done and I found it made a huge difference to their feeding technique.

Ds's tongue tie was not picked up till he was about 6 months despite the shredded nips and fact that he could only get a decent latch on when we were lying down to BF! Had him snipped soon after, BF improved 100% and the littleop did not phase DS at all- a few tears at being held down but stopped crying immediately afterwards. the Dr said that there are no nerves in the bit they cut so it does not hurt the child. Dr also said that if DS was anyolder they would probably have to do a general anaesthetic cos of his teeth so i would agree with bumblybee that you should have the op whilst your little one is still small.

Thanks for all your advice, i have just attended the breastfeeding cafe, the adviser there has referred DS to KCH to have tongue divided next tuesday, they have also requested that my GP give me Novogel circle wound dressings for my nipples as the nipple/areola area is splitting nd a better gel for DS mouth to kill the thrush, so i finally feel like i am getting somewhere

That's great Leenie, you should feel more confortable once you have applied all those lotions and potions and the TT has been divided. And well done for persevering with the BFing!
