I was thinking of bypassing potties and going straight for toilet trainer seats with dd as she likes copying what she's sees us doing. Has anyone any experience of this or do we need to do the potty thing first and then transfer to the loo?

You can do whichever you want.

Do bear in mind where your toilet is in relation to where your daughter will spend most of her time though; if the toilet is too far away she won't get there on time in the very early stages.

Do also bear in mind that it's your daughter who will be using the potty/toilet, not you; make sure that she is happy with using whichever you decide to use. Otherwise life could become very difficult! Small children are often intimidated by big toilets when they first sit on them, and she may feel more secure starting with a potty. Not all children do though - you just have to try it and see.
