Anyone else starting potty training? Moral support needed!

Started potty training with serious intent today with DS who's 3 at end of month. I've been using potty with him for a while and find that he uses it fine if leave him naked but feels no need to bother otherwise. Have decided the only option is to go straight to pants and have started today. I sense a long road ahead and just wondered if anyone else out there who fancies sharing there experiences with me.

Feedthegoat-that's fantastic.

We've also had no accidents today but he hasnt asked to go-I'm still taking him every hour or so.

How long has it taken your ds before he started saying he wants to go? I would imagine that once that's tackled you're nearly there.

feedthegoat · 01/11/2008 19:22

My mil says he asked her after a couple of days but it was pretty much end of 2nd week with me (Thursday this week). Today is the 1st day he's done it a few times. I'm still (trying) to get him to go every hour or so too though.

Hey it sounds like we're all making a bit of progress.. I'm just cautious of the 'two steps forward, one back' scenario! We had our FIRST poo in the loo (after 6 days!!), a couple of huge accidents, but DS is now asking to use loo sometimes which is progress. I think he gets annoyed if we remind him.. DH was in charge today and seemed to get more results.

Congratulations yankybrit My ds gets stroppy about being reminded too, its just one of many things he likes to have upperhand in at the moment mind. I'm hoping it's an age thing!

Ds is being a bit stubborn here too. I ask him if he needs to go, he says no then 10 seconds a puddle on the floor. I sometimes feel we are getting no-where although i really don't want to go back to nappies as i feel i'll be taking a huge step backwards. Maybe that means we are getting somewhere. It just starts to wear you down after a while.

We did manage a trip out to the supermarket with no accident a couple of days ago. Suppose we'll just have to keep going til it clicks.

Thank goodness we have a vax machine

DontlookatmeImshy · 02/11/2008 10:13

wow breakthrough.

I just asked him if he needed to do a wee. He said no.

So i went back to mn'ing then I looked up 30 seconds later to see him sitting on potty, he'd even taken his pants off, then he stood up and proudly announced he'd done a 'big wee mummy'.

Hurray.

Can I join? We just started yesterday with DD (2 in a weeks time). Thought she was showing some signs of readiness and I am expecting DC2 in Feb so it is now - or not until well after then!

Yesterday was awaful - she HATES being asked to sit on potty. So much for Gina's every 15 mins suggestion. Asking her to sit or try just results in tears and tantrums. Loads of accidents and wet clothes yesterday.

Today was better. We took a different approach and left the timing to her. She has started to go everytime in pants, but seems to stop when she feels the wet in her pants -then asks for a tissue or dry pants and we can then coax her into finishing the wee on the potty to great applause. Also had one poo in pants that she didn't mention - I was alerted because she carried her nappy changing mat into the living room and asked for new trousers!

Don't know if we should persevre from here or if she just isn't ready yet. Any thoughts?

Daffodilly · 02/11/2008 19:52

Oh - forgot to add that she seems to have pretty good ability to hold it. Went for over 3 hours without wee or accident this morning.

feedthegoat · 02/11/2008 19:54

Hi Daffodilly - I would give it at least a week or 2 before you decide if it's worth continuing. The first few days were awful but getting much better now. As long as you've got the stomach for it at the moment Dontlookatmeimshy-thats fab he took himself to potty!

Hi Daffodilly - yes I would def give it at least a week. I've been told 3. We are at the start of week two and there is some progress. We went out this morning with no accidents and DS did wee on loo when I asked him to try (rather than refuse as he did a few days ago). Hooray! However we still only have poos in the nappy at sleep times. Does anyone else find this? Is this normal?
He's also asking to do 'more wee' before he goes for a nap - as a control/terrible two thing - and refuses to get off the loo to go to bed! But it's hard to deny the request as I don't want to discourage him.
Has anyone else has this 'controlling' behaviour in relation to the training? How do you deal with it?

Daffodilly · 03/11/2008 18:25

Yikes - you mean they don't magically "get" it after 2-3 days? Guess that is a bit hopeful. It has been better today. Mostly though she seems to start and stop in her pants then ask for the potty - I guess it is a big step to learn to predict the need with some notice? Does that come though or is it that she isn't ready....

yankybrit - no experience of the "control" issues yet, but I can certainly see it coming and wonder why I am giving my two year old extra power to wield over me!

feedthegoat · 03/11/2008 18:50

Yankybrit - my ds used to use potty as a delaying tactic long before started serious training because he knew i wouldn't refuse! My ds has been dry all day but has had a poo accident. Seems better with wee. Daffodilly - i found the stop starting thing was first stage for my ds. About 5 days later started asking before. Though we in 3rd week and still having odd accident so don't think its an over night thing - most disappointing!! I'm pleased with how it's going though.

Bubbaloo · 03/11/2008 19:33

Have had another dry day today and he's had his first day at pre school in pants aswell.
Still taking him every hour though and hoping it will soon click and he'll tell me when he wants to go.

Daffodilly · 04/11/2008 15:06

Yey - improvement today. Wee + poo first things that she did in potty, took herself without prompting. Then agreed to sit and try for a wee when I did several hours later and did one.

So cute to see her so proud of herself too! Hope this is a trend that will continue and not a one off good morning...

Bubbaloo · 04/11/2008 18:51

That's great Daffodilly.

We've also had some progress here.Ds has now had no accidents for 2 whole days and has asked twice today to use the toilet.Just hoping it continues.

feedthegoat · 04/11/2008 22:13

Bet you're both really pleased with that. Ds had an accident tonight but on plus side he asked for a wee at playschool and stayed dry. He was was with my mum today and even asked to go for a wee while out playing in soft play area which i never would have believed. Usually requires somekind of manhandling to get him out of those places!

OP posts:
yankybrit · 05/11/2008 08:37

Wow very impressed by your soft play story feed the goat. We've had success outside of the house, but I'm still not confident of the soft play or places not near a loo (eg shops!) as he won't sit on the travel potyt. We had no major accidents yesterday and he seems to be holding on until he gets to the loo, which is very pleasing.

DontlookatmeImshy · 05/11/2008 09:46

Sounds like you are all making progress

Unfortunately after fooling me into thinking we were getting somewhere, we seem to have gone backwards. Feel like tearing my hair out tbh.

Aarrghhhhh.

Bubbaloo · 05/11/2008 14:54

Feedthegoat-that's great re:the soft play. We're aso going to soft play on Friday and I'm tempted to put a pull up on him just incase.
Ds has been dry today but just done a poo in his pants which really upset him,so I'm hoping he'll ask for the toilet next time, instead.

feedthegoat · 05/11/2008 19:47

Dontlookatmeimshy-been abit like that here today! Doesn't pay to get too confident with this one does it? We went out with friend straight from playschool. Had a wee accident at playschool.Told me he needed a wee out but wet himself about a minute later whilst i was hot footing it to toilet. On plus side i suppose he did warn me! Did ask to go twice during lunch out so not all bad. Was out with friend who's started potty training her dd so we had quite a collection of bagged up clothes between us

OP posts:
yankybrit · 05/11/2008 21:20

Oh your tales are so reassuring and amusing. Feed the goat - I think it's great he's telling you when he needs to go. My DS is now doing all wees in the loo but I am reminding him every few hours. Perhaps if I held out longer he'd tell me? He's great at holding on!! I'm feeling SO Much better than this time last week. But still a way to go. Still does most poos in the nappy at sleep time- is anyone else finding this? At least I've not yet had poo in the pants. Am waiting for that one

Alishanty · 05/11/2008 21:55

Hi. We have had some progress. I was ready to pack it in after too many accidents in trousers but dp was adament we should continue and now, although ds has the odd accident, he is now only getting through about 2 pairs of trousers a day as opposed to 4! He will occasionally ask but usually we have to take him to the potty. He has also started using his step for the toilet and can 'hang on' until he gets there. He will go on the toilet most times before his nap. He has managed one tiny poo on the potty from a standing position lol but most of the time poos in his nappy in the morning (like yours yankybrit) or in his pants but I gather from others that this can take longer.

DontlookatmeImshy · 06/11/2008 09:11

lol i know what you mean feedthegoat.

Fortunately i didn't tell anyone in RL. Actually no-one knows we are even trying to PT at the mo

Had a few more success with poos since then but for the rest of it he shouts "wee mummy" as he starts to do it on the floor and then runs to the potty just in time to catch the last bit.

Oh well, we'll get there in the end. I refuse to give up now cos i do think we've made some progress even if it only seems a very small step.

feedthegoat · 06/11/2008 19:22

Ds has been really good today (even asking for toilet twice during mums and tots and therefore has had to try and find new ways to work through his clothes! Emptied a full beaker of juice down himself at tots group. Went out for lunch with friend (crikey - reading this it sounds like i'm always out!) and ds was determined not to waste drop of next drink and bolted down a huge beaker of icey juice. Choked on last gulp and threw it up on restaurant floor. Worst part is we were with my friends mil so were in a child friendly but fairly grown up place . After much apologising and mopping up I crawled out without daring to look anyone in the eye! As my (new) washer still can't be fixed without part from Germany I'm starting to think my life would be perfect for one of those demented mummy type books! Ds has been right as rain since however think i'll slunk at home tommorrow .
