At what age would you expect dc to be able to get shoes on and off?

I mean the velcro-strap type ones.

It was suggested to me today that ds (2.2) should really be able to do both, and at least be expected to take them off himself. He can actually get them off very easily when he wants to (usually in the car ) but is strangely resistant to doing it when we get home from being out. He just says 'You do it please Mummy!' and no amount of encouraging can get him to do it himself.

He doesn't seem able to put them ON himself. He is pretty good at fiddly toys and puzzles, though, which makes me think maybe he just doesn't want to.

My ds is 4 and only does it when he can be bothered!

well I often have to help my 4 yr old so i really wouldn't worry

Probably around 2 or 3 but its certainly not something that i would stress about.

If he can't do it when he goes to nursery then maybe make a big effort to teach him, but i honestly don't think it matters at this age.

DS2 is 5 and he can't be bothered to put his on himself. I assume he does it at PE but something happens to him at home which means he can't do it

and when we are hurrying to get out of the door in the morning, I can't be bothered to argue with him

dd (2.6) can take them off easily, but sometimes asks for help.
She can put shoes on herself, but it depends on the shoe - trainers are too difficult, shoes are ok, wellies have been possible for months and months.
I think she's pretty average in the shoe department.

Thanks for the replies. I had been supremely unbothered about it until today so will go back to that!
