Why are you suspicious?

Weaning...like cod, around 4 months, less for my middle son.

Sweets...chocolate before they were one! One of lifes pleasures, a gummy mouth and a chocolate button

Ears...dd had hers done for her 11th birthday

Home alone...if dd is here I will leave all 3, but only for 10 mins max. I leave dd alone for much longer.

Please feel free to add your own.

LynetteScavo · 03/10/2008 19:17

Cod, I've said it before, I'll say it again - you are the only person on Mumsnet who understands me!

Notquitegrownup · 03/10/2008 19:21

.Wean your baby - 10 months ds1, 6 months ds2

2.Allow your child sweets - 15 months ds1 (he had dozens of Easter Eggs for his first birthday from my mum and her friends, which I dutifully ate!!) 12 months ds2 I think

3.Have your DCs ear/s pierced - can't imagine. I have boys.

4.Leave your DC home for 20 mins - aged 8. Note, I was appalled last year when a friend left her ds1 alone aged 8. Then mine turned 8 and suddenly it seemed OK to pop and collect ds2 from a friend's house, leaving ds1 with my mobile number and the front door locked.

  2. 2 years old
  3. 14
4.not sure yet, dd only 2.
artichokes · 03/10/2008 19:23

1.Wean your baby - I waited 'til 2 weeks before 6 months.

2.Allow your child sweets - chocolate = 18 months(ish), jelly sweets etc = 3 or 4

3.Have your DCs ear/s pierced - if DD wishes she can have them pierced after she turns 10.

4.Leave your DC home for 20 mins - depends on the child, maybe around 8 or 9.

chankins · 03/10/2008 19:27
  1. between 5 and 6 months depending on baby
  2. chocolate buttons before one but thats all
  3. 12 or 13
  4. maybe 8 or 9 but would depend on child
Shitehawk · 03/10/2008 19:27

There's no such thing as "normal".

Dd was 4 months when I weaned her onto solids - if I were doing it again I would wait until 6 months.

She had chocolate from about 18 months, proper sweets from around 3, boiled sweets from around 5, isn't allowed things like chewing gum yet at 7.

She can have her ears pierced when she's 35 14. Will probably let her negotiate that to 12 or 13 though.

Depends on the child when it's OK to leave them for 20 minutes - not yet though. Maybe 9 or 10? Will cross that bridge when I find it.

Portofino · 03/10/2008 19:27

Weaning - 4 months
Sweets - can't remember but probably choc buttons around 9 months
Ears - 12 ( absolutely hate LOs with pierced ears)
Leave alone - can't really imagine - 10?

Here's one - stay overnight at a friends house?

My dd (4.5)is gagging but the invitations have not been forthcoming.

Flamebat · 03/10/2008 19:30

1.Wean your baby.

4-6 months... pref leaving until 6 months

2.Allow your child sweets.

About 1 - pref just white choc for as long as possible though!

3.Have your DCs ear/s pierced.

  1. I am considered very old fashioned by rl friends, positively slack here it seems

4.Leave your DC home for 20 mins.

Completely depends on the child.

5.Please feel free to add your own.

don't wanna :p

GobbledigookisThrifty · 03/10/2008 19:30
  1. weaning - depends when the baby is ready but around 5-6 months I'd say although ds1 was about 8 months before he was itnerested.

2, sweets - depends, choc buttons from about 7-8 months here sweets, don't really do 'sweets' till school age

  1. ears - god, 16. Hideous on children imo.
  1. At least 10 but I'm finding it hard to decide because my eldest is only 7 so I can't really think what a 10 year old is like.
PeppermintPatty · 03/10/2008 19:31

1.Wean your baby. 4 1/2 months

2.Allow your child sweets. DD had chocolate on Christmas day at 6 months old

3.Have your DCs ear/s pierced. I've not had to make this decision yet - they would definitely have to be old enough to have their own opinion on it though!

4.Leave your DC home for 20 mins. Don't know I haven't had to make this decision yet either. I guess it would depend on the child.

5.Sleep in their own room - 3 months old

DeJaVous · 03/10/2008 19:33

Not sure what your getting at here, but still...

  1. Around six months
  1. When they are old enough to notice that they are not getting something that other children are, and seem to enjoy.
  1. Definitely no younger than 9. I wouldn't be happy doing it before secondary school really.
  1. Depends. Don't know. My DD is only 10 months. Secondary school age?
  1. Why are you asking?
TheFallenMadonna · 03/10/2008 19:33

1.Wean your baby.
I did 4 months for ds, 6 months for dd. 6 was easier. Would go with that were I to have another.

2.Allow your child sweets.
God knows. No rule. Pretty sure my dad gave both dc chocolate buttons at, well it must have been 4 months and 6 months if that was when they were weaned.

3.Have your DCs ear/s pierced.
Secondary school for dd. Ds I wouldn't be happy full stop (blatant double standard )

4.Leave your DC home for 20 mins.
Hmm. Might consider it soon-ish for ds (7).

beansmum · 03/10/2008 19:34

1.Wean your baby. - 6 months

2.Allow your child sweets. - 2, chocolates only.

3.Have your DCs ear/s pierced. - 16

4.Leave your DC home for 20 mins. - 9ish, if they are sensible.

DeJaVous · 03/10/2008 19:38

Stay at a friends house over night - 4 ish? Depends totally on the child and the situation.

Sleep in own room - 6 months

fruitful · 03/10/2008 19:40
  1. Weaning - when they walk to the fridge and make themselves a sandwich. No? Oh, about 7 months for the last two.
  1. Sweets - earlier for each child it seems. Although ds1 (3.5) refuses sweets, bless him. He is too suspicious to put one in his mouth. One day he'll risk it and find out what he has been missing.
  1. Ears pierced - dd is asking already (she is 6). I've said 13.
  1. Leave alone - 8 or 9? Don't know yet
  1. Sleepovers? Well dd could go now except that they'd probably want me to have their child back, and I don't see the point of letting myself in for that, not for oohh, another 3 or 4 years?
ohdearwhatamess · 03/10/2008 19:43
  1. Wean - 6 months.
  2. Sweets - 1 year(ish) but not hung up about it
  3. Pierced ears - never, they are boys
  4. Leave at home - 9 depending on how sensible
cory · 03/10/2008 19:44

1.Wean your baby.

I introduced solids very slowly between 4 and 6 months, but would follow recommendations of 6 months if I were doing it now. Still bf'ing dd at 11 months though, though only for comfort.

2.Allow your child sweets.
Can't remember, but probably 1-2 for chocolates, 2 for sweets (but not boiled ones)

3.Have your DCs ear/s pierced.

Won't stop her once she is 15 if she wants to pay for it. But I'm not paying for it. Ever.

4.Leave your DC home for 20 mins.

8 seems a good age. Did it with 8yo ds this afternoon when dd and I went to optician.
