Lock on the bathroom door - 3.5 year old locking himself in, what age do they use locks safely from?

My 3.5 year old locked himself in the bathroom this week
Luckily he could unlock the door

I have asked DH to move the lock higher up out of DS's reach but he thinks if he can unlock the door there isn't a problem

What age did your children use bathroom locks from?

None of us even close the door fully. But in case ds gets adventurous I'm glad we have one of those locks on the handle plate that can be opened from the outside, maybe that's an idea.

or until he's older, have one of those foam things that you can put on doors to stop them slamming- if it's placed high enough, adults will be able to remove it for privacy!

I am puting ours high up...

Why have a lock on the bathroom door at all? Can you not just have a 'door closed = occupied' rule?

The door is kept closed to keep the 18mth old out

The locks on the doors to all our bathrooms can be unlocked from the other side with a coin and I keep a coin on top of the doorframe for this very purpose!

If he can unlock it without a problem and you can also unlock it from the outside then it isn't a problem is it?

we ahve those locks that can be opened with a coin from the outside as well.

why don't you fit them?

You can't unlock it from the outside
The window has locks on so I'd have to force the door/break the door to get in if he doesn't unlock it

I put the baby-dan around the bathroom door IYSWIM so dd could open it and get to the loo but ds couldn't. Don't know if something like that would help? Dd locked me into the garden the other day - thank God DH was in at the time......

I think I will just go with moving the lock up higher
