We're finally clawing back a little 'me/us' time and are going to venture out at the weekend but, not having used a 'proper' babysitter before, what is the going rate these days?

(ie. can we afford it, on top of the meal out and the potential cab fare home?!)

A mate of mine charges anything from £6 - £8.50 per hour (zone 3)

A mars bar and a pat on the head.

£8 in West London zone 2 (both were professional nannies doing some extra work in evenings). No cab fare home for that tho - we only used ones who lived near us otherwise you end up spending more on the sitter than the night out!!
