I felt soooooooooo guilty the other day as in a md rush I gave my 3 year old fresh pasta nad pesto followed by strawberries, grapes and apple slices....After watching JO's new programme I feel totally relieved.

Im not a great cook but would never, never, never feed my 3 year old kebab meat or chips and cheese from a take a way!!!!

expat - never ask for Steak tartare in France - it comes with a raw egg still in it's shell, on top of raw mince meat.

wasabipeanut · 01/10/2008 12:22

I asked for a rare steak in Toulouse on Friday night and it was chuffing gorgeous. Wouldn't be able to look a steak tartare in the face though which is silly as the only difference is about a minute's cooking time!

nailpolish · 01/10/2008 12:23

dh had steak tartare when we were in paris
they served it with fries - the fries were cooking the mince beside them on the plate
it looked horrible
dh tanned the lot

expatinscotland - don't worry about salmonella -

look here

nailpolish · 01/10/2008 12:25

actually steak tartare must be the easiest dish in the world to make
raw mince on plate
raw egg on top
voila

belgo · 01/10/2008 12:26

I know an american who accidently ordered staek tartare without realising it was raw. He took it outside to the restaurant's BBQ which happened still to be hot and cooked it into a burger, to the amazement of his french colleagues

wasabipeanut · 01/10/2008 12:27

Dittany I am with you on that one.

Btw, Jamie Oliver is getting fatter with every series isn't he?

nailpolish · 01/10/2008 12:27

yes he is quite chunky isnt he

expatinscotland · 01/10/2008 12:29

oh my mother loves that nasty steak tartare!

she's so French gross in that respect.

she'll eat any type of offal, too.

and she's eaten horse meat, lots of mystery meat in Asia and even dog.

i can't hardly bear to go to restaurants with her because she's probably going to order something that i find smelly.

mumof2222222222222222boys · 01/10/2008 12:31

I love steak tartare and runny eggs...but not a fan of kebabs.

Although we are comfortably off, I have to say that I think twice about take aways because of the cost. Fish and chips for 2 sets you back £10 at our local, and a curry is nearer £20. I cook most nights partly because of teh cost, but tbh, mainly because I enjoy it (and I work full time).

A lot of people criticise JO, but at least he is trying to do something. I helped out for a brief period at a Sure Start cooking course - it was good fun and some of the mums were really into it. It put "Middle Class Angst" into perspective.

belgo · 01/10/2008 12:31

and don't buy sandwich Americain in Belgium - that's also made with raw mince meat - I've made that mistake!

expatinscotland · 01/10/2008 12:33

barf, belgo! thanks for the tip!

belgo · 01/10/2008 12:34

i think they deliberately named it Americain to foll foreigners

belgo · 01/10/2008 12:34

fool of course

captainmummy · 01/10/2008 12:35

NailPoilsh i don't think you can just get a pound of tesco mince and chuck an egg on top. You shuold really mince your own prime steak and add finely-chopped onion and then a free-range egg from known sources. Not quick or particularly easy.

But delish.

Mercy · 01/10/2008 12:35

V good dittany

Apparently when Jamie went onto the football pitch at the beginning of the programme the crowd were shouting 'Get off you fat bastard'

nailpolish · 01/10/2008 12:42

is that a joke captain

I had enough of Jamie Oliver.

Cannot stomach any more of his "saving the poor's people's health" palavar.

He just make some much cash out of it.

Preach the poor and get paid for it.

He owns the Production Company that makes the series for C4. A pretty hefty amount of production fee goes to his pocket, plus his presenter fees, plus, plus, plus,

He makes loooooots of money by preaching!

I would also highlight lots of bad things to do with British society if i got paid the lurverly fees he gets!

So siiiiick of it!

noddyholder · 01/10/2008 12:53

ooh egg in a cup i love that all mashed up loads of butter!
I think JO heart is in the right place but he always gets it a bit wrong but at least he tries i suppose. There is a kebab shop near us really expensivve and disgusting.Typican MN though to stress the fresh pasta hilarious

wasabipeanut · 01/10/2008 13:02

It's interesting that a time when many people seem to be heartily fucked off with the nanny state and being told what and what not to do at every turn JO restarts his "poor people can eat well too" campaign.

Kind of demonstrates how well he is tuned into the feelings of the nation. Not very.

captainmummy · 01/10/2008 13:05

Nail - no it was not a joke. Proper steak tartere is not easy. Or cheap. It's not mince and egg. A packet of mince from tescos should to be cooked. It has been sitting around for days, brimming with bacteria (chopped/minced meat is a prime breeding ground) which is ok if cooked until brown, but not for eating raw. Chopping/mincing your own for steak tartare is a must.

That is the problem too with donner kebabs, the fact that it is chopped meat, mushed together and full of bacteria. Heated and cooled by turns. Full of bug-loving grease.

PoorOldEnid · 01/10/2008 13:13

ooh I had wasabi peanuts yesterday! They were very yummy (and utterly middle class and ponce tastic)

wasabipeanut · 01/10/2008 13:18

I am very middle class Enid
