Baby with almost paralysed vocal cords - Trying to support friend but never heard of it

I just wondered if any of you can shed some light,

My friend has just found out her 6 week old baby has almost paralysed vocal cords (open) and fluid keeps going to her chest - doctors amazed she's not got pneumonia already

I've never heard of this but really want to support my friend. She's really been through it. She tried for 7 years for this baby, 5th attempt of IVF.
Had an extremely traumatic time during and after birth. Baby very small, 6lbs even though a week late, she kept going blue and not taking milk from mum's breast. Mum's been exhausting herself trying to express milk for her baby which she kept choking on

Has anyone had any experience of this? Is it treatable? Will she grow out of it?

Many thanks in advance

Blimey

Issues like this are often dealt with by speech nad lang. therapists who specialise in dysphagia (swaloowing and feeding diffs)

She could get onto our professional site or ring them to try and find a specialist who would work with ENT surgeon.

Had to post. This sounds awful but I have no idea about it. I think I have heard of it but don't know anything else.

Obv the baby girl has made it to 6 weeks without anyone realising so that's an indication that it's not SO bad, isn't it?

I hope someone can give you some better answers

xx

this is a bit godly at the end (I know not everyone is into that), but it might be a similar story??

jimjamshaslefttheyurt · 24/09/2008 19:32

another personal story here

FruitynNutty · 24/09/2008 19:36

yes she has made it to 6 weeks but been in and out of hospital because of choking. She was in hospital for a week after the birth as her breathing kept stopping.
It's so sad especially as it seems one thing after another Mum is really scared as baby keeps getting infections which could develop into pneumonia. I know no one deserves this but it's been such an effort for them to conceive in the 1st place.

Must be very rare

The baby has had a brain scan today. I'm hoping the results are as positive as they can be

Hi FruitynNutty,

So sorry to hear what your friend is going through. Have no advice but had to post.

FruitynNutty · 26/09/2008 13:29

Thank you guys for posting, I think it's really really rare. It must be for there not to be any personal stories on MN!
Ah well, was worth a shot
