Can anyone recommend a good toybox / storage for living room? But not wood or rattan...long story....

Well, not really that long a story but today I found loads of tiny tiny bugs in DS's toy boxes in the living room! After much Googling I think they are booklice (yuk) that like to live in things they can eat (like wood, books, rattan perhaps as that's what the boxes were made of) so the boxes have been binned and all the toys are in the freezer to kill the bugs.

So I am now looking for a new toy box for the living room (ie so would like it to be fairly tasteful, no cartoon characters on it etc!), ideally not made of wood. I have fallen out with wooden things big time this week as we have also found damp under the stairs which had to be cleaned out and all the wooden shelves replaced with metal. Booklice also like damp places so we are now opening lots of windows to get air flowing, we never really did this before. Nightmare!

Anyhoo, if you have any ideas for nice toy storage please let me know thanks

i'll be watching this too...sick of the over flowing tatty pop-up box we have now.

Some people keep toys in little hammocks, but I don't know if that would suit your house or not.

I don't know about booklice but I wonder if they can eat into wood if that wood is painted? Would Dulux for wood & metal keep them out?

We have one of these but not sure it's tastefull enough for you...

Nbg · 24/09/2008 10:18

We had that Dalrymps, but ds1 stood on it and broke the sides, then weed on it

Was pretty much useless after that

We have this one and the front folds down to make a road map thingy. DS1 loves it.

Hi there

We went to Ikea a while back with the intention of buying one of their toy storage systems. But what we ended up with, and it works very well, is a Billy Bookcase (I think it's the 80x102 measurement one but you can get bigger or smaller) which fits 2 of their clear plastic boxes (Samla 22l ones) on each shelf so 6 boxes in total and room for more stuff on the top. DD can see what's in the boxes so help herself to what's in them and it matches the other living room furniture. Wasn't too expensive either.

Thanks everyone, I went to Ikea today and got a big baskety type one that's raised slightly off the floor so I think that will help air get underneath and hopefully our problem won't return!
