Wooden train track, we have a mix of brio/ thomas/ elc and family can add to it for gifts.

Playmobil. You can never go wrong with it, and small parts can be taken away until later.

Musical instruments, elc have a lovely range (but as a gift maybe not a good idea, the parents might not thank you)

Aquadraw/ etch a sketch, heaven as they can be creative without mess.
