Thumbsucking babies - what age did yours start?

I am desperately hoping my ds3 will suck his thumb. He won't take a dummy and is very sucky. He is 8 weeks old. Tonight, in the sling, he did suck his thumb for a moment once I had removed my breast and he was still sucky. But he did not keep it in long.

My eldest sucked his thumb from 9 weeks old, but I can't remember how it came about.

My second had a dummy so that's no help.

I was wondering if there was an age when they are develomentally ready to do it? My ds3 is quite small, whereas my ds1 was big - not sure if this makes a difference.

My dd started at 12 weeks, ds was a bit later at about 16 weeks.

in the womb.

so wish it hadn't. She is 5 yo now and I will be facing huge orthodontist bills in a few years time, I reckon.

We took away DD's dummy at 16wks and she immediately started sucking her 2 middle fingers instead. She had already started sucking her fingers a bit from around 12/13 wks.
