It's never too late to start. At some point it progresses from EC to potty training. Loads of people put their 9 month olds on the potty and have them wee/poo. It's easier if you wait until she gives a sign that she's going to poo (does she grunt/squat/make a 'poo face'?) We didn't start until 14 mth old, but that's because he just wouldn't sit still for more than a couple of seconds until then, and a potty was never an option (great stacking/sorting toy) so we went straight to a toilet seat.

"Is it as simple as sitting her on the pot, waiting and then praising her loads? "
Pretty much

Personally I don't really praise DD for using the potty/toilet. I tend to say. that's right, poo/wee belongs in the potty.
