What's the consensus on babies sleeping on their sides?

My new DS seems to settle best when put down on his side (discovered via nightfeeds lying down.) Do you think it'll do anything to his spine / shoulders etc?

Hope not! Both of mine slept on their sides from newborn to feed, even though I used to try to roll them back (not very hard though).

dd2 slept on her side from the beginning, due to laryngomalacia (floppy larynx, breathed better on her side or front), with the blessing of countless medical people.

She's 21 months, no problems with spine so far
