infacol or gripe water - either of them work?

DS2 1month old and very windy, especially at night (strangely worst between 1am and 7am. I am going spare with exhaustion.

Have gripe water or infacol worked for anyone else? If using gripe water how is it best to give it? Presumably whatever I use (eg spoon, syringe) I need to sterilise everytime I use it. If that is the case why do I not need to sterilise the infacol dropper? (or do I?)

Any other suggestions gratefully received.

I used both and gripe water seemed to work best. DD used to drink it quite well but I used a spoon or bottle for DS (with limited success) then a cup (he wasn't good at this type of thing). I washed things in hot water but didn't sterilise things (if I remember rightly).

BTW my childminder swears by gripe water and still gives it to her teenage son

We found infacol worked great for dd when she was new colicky - never occurred to me to steralise the dropper, wouldn't think it would matter. Assume as only using for her and bottle opened fron new steralising would be ott.

Have you tried lying your ds on his back and moving his legs like he's riding a bike, used to help shift some of dds wind - knees up to tummy each time, also chat to your mw/health visitor as baby massage can help - special ones for colic which can really help. Hope you get some resolution soon, colic is rotten.

Infacol worked really well for ds (who is now 3mo and still getting it as I'm a bit scared to stop!)

We never sterilise the dropper - I did wonder about that, but have had no problems.

When he was very small we gave him a double dose each time - 2 droppers - and that did the trick.

PS I would also recommend twiga's suggestion of cycling his legs. That seems to help ds get wind out downwards!

Infacol was good but for only a short space of time - couple of weeks max.

Gripe water, brilliant! And cheap.

Cranial osteopathy also worked a treat with my DS2. Had been screaming with windy for weeks. Took him to the cranial osteopath. Whatver she did made him do a massive guff, and he fell sound asleep on the way home and was better ever after. Expensive but worth every penny in my case. Would give gripe water a try first though, it is good.

I used to call infacol "duzfucol"- but I think it would still be worth a try. You keep trying all sorts then they grow out of it anyway just before you drop from exhaustion...

I never had any success with infacol. Gripe water, on the other hand, was like a miracle in a bottle for DS1. He'd gulp it down and be calmed instantly. I used to give it to him on a soft plastic spoon.

It didn't have such a good effect on DS2, but then his colic wasn't so bad either

infacol worked for us but chiropractor worked wonders - worth every penny for DS2 who was very windy and colicky

When tested in trials neither works at all, but I useds infacol on ds for the placebo effect. Chiropractors are scientifically proven to be bunkum too but feel free if it makes you feel better. Wait a few weeks/months and they grow out of it. Colic is hell.

Thanks everyone. Am trying gripe water today (using a spoon, with a lot of dribbles!)and have done the bicycling legs thing. We have had some hefty burps so maybe it's helping.. Fingers crossed for tonight.

My dd was the same. We used Infacol to start with as its suitable from birth. I think it worked a bit. When she was a month old we moved to gripe water - It worked a treat. She has massive burps!

She is now 11 weeks old and we stopped using it about 2 weeks ago. She burps fine now.

I found that feeding DS in a more sitting upright position helped hugely.

I've tried Dentinox and two out of three times it's made DD do a massive burp and calm down.

DS had colic for six months, and we thought it would never end. We tried everything, but the only thing that really worked was something we stumbled on by accident - Ashton & Parsons herbal powder, which we were giving him for teething pain. Best of luck.
