can your 7 year old tell the time

My ds is now 7 but cannot tell the time as yet.
I am now starting to feel quite bad about it as I realise its something I have not really treid that much to teach him but on the occasions that I have he seems to have trouble grasping it.
What has got me thinking about this is I had one of his mates the same age at our house and found that he could tell the time with ease and seemed to have a understanding of time.
Just wondering is this something that all 7 year olds should be able to do by now.
I feel quite bad about it at the moment so do realise I probably should be knuckling down with him and teaching him.

Like laweaselmys said, struggling to tell the time from an analog clock may be a right-left problem - I was 10 before I learned to read an analog clock though no problems with the underlying concepts, fractions, base12 etc.

If your DS also can't tell "right from left" easily don't worry - it is likely compensated for in other ways (strong on geometry, model-making...)

I treasured my digital watch as a kid. What's not to love?

Yes, I bought a 'teaching clock' when ds was 6 and just started with o'clock, quarter past, half past quarter to, made a game of it, so I read the time he made for me as well, built it up from there and now at 7 and a half he also knows digital time and the 24 hour clock.Having their own watch helps as well.

Mine both could when they were 7.

Rather than blame the school, buy him a spiffing new watch, and sit down and explain to him how to tell the time. It's a five minute job (time it )
