God I must seem a right nark! But how do I get my DS to stay in his bed?

My DS is 2 he's just went into his bed for the first time tonight! He normally goes to bed at 7.30ish. I read him a story and sat with him but everytime we move he comes out of the room screaming for another story but when we read it he starts all over again. I sat with him for 20 minutes earlier and he fell asleep until I moved!

He's now going through bouts of crying to go to sleep and hyperactivity!

am having same problem tonight but its the cot my dd2 keeps climing out of - am considering a nail gun at this time

ARGH! See he kind of needs to get used to a bed NOW! We are going on a holiday in a few days and he has to sleep in a ready bed so he really will need to try it!

I am soo stressed out with him right now!

ear plugs are good too - pretend its part of the handcuff regime

mamadiva I KNOW how you feel, have only just got hosue back from a visit from Inlaws and tonight was NOT meant to be spent running up and down the stairs putting her back into her cot

am sure because he's on holiday it will all be an exciting novelty to him and he'll sleep no problem

MD what about putting a rolled big towel along the edge so he feels more secure ie, not so much manuvourability(sp)?

I lasted a whole week of that, and then gave up when ds managed to climb back into his cot to go to sleep. Also fairly urgent as his new room will not have room for a the cot and bunk bed he should be in.

Could you take a travel cot on holiday?

Or just keep him up until he falls asleep with you and then put him into the bed while you are away?

Have you got a copy of toddler taming? Use the rope trick, it has always worked for mine. he is allowed to play quietly in his room, but I use it when he pushes his luck, just to reinforce the message these days.

on holiday: supper, then long walk then bed routine

Well after reading the smae Thomas book about 8 times and an hour sitting outside his room and just putting him back in his bed everytime he got up and sitting with him for a while he finally went to sleep at 9.45!

He rolled out of the bed twice and was up at 5am though! Am so tired but will persevere! DP wants to re assemble cot but he has to move sometime and we've started now so might as well carry on surely it'll only be for a week or 2! Please tell me it is

I am a first time mum and you guys are talking moving to bed i am wondering about moving to cot i regret ever putting him in our bed, my excuse was he doesn't sleep well in his cot because he is small when he was born he weighed 1,7kg born three weeks earlier than expected date but now he has gained weight and the moment you put him down in his cot he wakes up somedays it works for at least two to three hrs after the next feed no more cot he wants to sleep in our bed, boy! that is straineous!!!

mamadiva- hate to be the bearer of bad news but we moved DS to a bed 4 weeks ago and I just started a similar thread on the sleep section as DS is STILL getting out of bed.

Monday night DH put him back to bed 36 times(yes I was that bored) before he eventally gave in only then for him to be back up again 2hrs later.

Im thinking about putting him back in the cot to save my sanity.

We use a sweet dreams box filled with goodies like stickers, fancy pencils, pocket money toys.
If they stay in their beds and go to sleep without any fuss, then in the morning they get something out of the box.

Bribery I know, but it works with ours.
Wonder if your ds is a little young for it but worth a try

DS1 is nearly 4, has been in his bed since 2 and still gets out of his. We've resigned ourselves to waiting til his teenage years before he'll stay put

We tried everything, getting cross, bribery, rewards, ignoring and takeing back to bed a-la supernanny. nothing worked and bedtimes just became a battle.

In the end we babyproofed his room, put a gate on his doorway and put a few books and soft toys in there for him. We also put a night light in, very dim but enough that he could see what he was doing. As he's got older the gate has gone and the light is on a timer (when light goes off its bedtime, when it comes on its time to get up). Doesn't always work but we've decided to go with the flow a bit rather than getting annoyed and cross with him - unpleasant for everyone.

As for the holiday I would strongly recommend you take a travel cot. those ready beds are noisy and uncomfortable and if he won't stay in his bed at home he certainly won't in an exciting new place. Sorry its not what you want to hear but am speaking from bitter experience. We found it easier to keep ds1 up later when on hols then try and insist he go to bed alone in a strange bed in a strange place.

Hey everyone thanks for the replies!!!

DS has now been in his bed for 4 nights and the last 2 he has asked to go to bed at 7pm and stayed in his room all night! Not in his bed though I heard him playing in his room at 1am the other morning but he went back to sleep at about 2

We are going to stay with MIL for 5days tomorrow so will hopefully put up with the ready bed! The travel cot is there anyway but he hates it and climbs out of it.

my ds never gets out of bed at home, but will when we are away???!!!! However, someone lent us a 'readybed' kind of mixture between blow up bed and sleeping bag, and he stayed in that all night for 2 nights at my mum and dads, despite the fact he was in their room. They're blardy contrary creatures aren' they? Have you tried the putting back to bed technique a la supernanny?
