ds2(4yo) and i just had a conversation.

he pulled away a bit as i went to kiss his cheek, so i asked him if he didnt like me kissing him anymore (was smiling, am not an emotional leech like that comes across in print).
he said he didnt.
so i asked if hugs were ok, and he said
'i dont like doing anyfing anymore.'
[btw, of course i am taking this all with a big pile of salt but still a wee internal [gulp] anyway, obv]
so i told him that i wouldnt try to hug or kiss him anymore, but that if he ever wanted a hug or kiss for any reason he just had to ask.
he replied that he wouldnt ever want one ()
so i elaborated by saying
'if you ever want a hug if you hurt yourself, or youre scared or you just feel sad, or even if you want a happy hug, you just have to ask...'
and he nodded sagely, thought, and said;
'i know those fings are girly, but i would still let you do dem if i am cwying'

I love the "let you do dem" as if you were the one to benefit from it.

When DS's dad and I separated, I allowed DS, then 4, to sleep with me for some time as I thought it was helping him to settle down with the new circumstances. I spend days on end wondering how to send him back to his bed until one day, after one day when he was told he couldn't do something and he splurted out:

" If you do that, I will never, ever sleep with you again"

We both have been sleeping happily in our own beds since that day!

i am suppressing urge to go all out and chuck out the boys' bunks and build one giant bed with loads of single duvets on and sleep in with my little guys while theyre still little and want to cuddle.

would be a right pisser if i did that and one turned round and said that to me, eh?

i thought he meant at first that hurting or being scared etc were 'girly' things (and thus despicable) and was wondering what on earth i was supposed to say to that, and where on earth he could get such mad ideas at the gae of 4 and living on an old farm in the middle of nowhere... then realised he meant affection was 'girly'... which is still , but less alarming i thought.
