It is their way of getting rid of the nitrogen-containing waste products that result from natural protein metabolism. Mammals (e.g. humans) get rid of this waste in the form of urea in the urine. It takes a lot of water to dissolve the urea. It is believed that birds and other non-mammals try to conserve water by excreting the nitrogen-containing waste product in the form of uric acid. This is the white stuff. Birds only need to lose small amounts of water with the uric acid, compared to the amount lost in our urine. So it is actually not their poop, but their pee.

Ok.

CVQ was right in everything she said.

Basically birds only have 1 hole called a cloaca (or something like that). Their poo and wee accumulates there and kind of forms 1 waste product as opposed to the 2 that humand produce. I think that it basically falls out of the bird when it reaches a critical mass (although I may be dreaming that one).

CVQ is right in that it is white as it is mostly uric acid as opposed to urea. It goes dark in teh summer when the birds have been eating berries as the colour of the berries comes through teh digestive system.

No Googling or C&Ping involved.
