how 'safe' are teenagers in a big city?

we're considering the move. FAntastic city with loads of amenities, public transport parks and ok schools to lovely village outside small city (more town really) pretty, safe, near both sets of grandparents good schools - but very 'white'
The main reason for the move is imagining how the kids will grow up. It's great now but Can't imagine letting them out when older in city as though where we live is really lovely it's not far to less lovely areas and town is massive. that said there are more facilities than in the lovely 'country' ie good coffee. btw i'm not really talking wellies rural just not walking distance to a sushi bar!
