Would you let him go?

I know there's been a very similar thread to this (and I've looked coddy, I just can't find it ) so apologies in advance.

Last night, after being warned that he would miss the end of a programme because he needed a bath, ds totally lost it when I switched the TV off (he's 6). Lots of pushing, shouting, total disobedience. He was warned that if he carried on, he wouldn't be allowed to go to Beavers tonight. Sure enough, he carried on and so was told that he wouldn't be going.

Of course, this morning he's very sorry and is desperate to go. I knew this would happen and DH and I discussed it last night and our inclination is to stand firm.

Would you?

I'd stand firm too. If it's any consolation ds had a massive strop this am and lost his yu gi oh or however you spell it cards AND a fairy cake from his lunch. We won't be backing down on the cards and he won't get them back until Sunday. He will be vile after school because of it but I don't care, we made the threat, we have to carry it out.

soapbox · 04/02/2005 11:16

I'll need to give that a try MarsLady.

In my defense though, I never ever back down from the original punishment. And I do agree, I really only have to threaten these days and they do take me very seriously!

stickynote · 04/02/2005 11:16

Right lots of standing firm in the FN and WWW houses tonight (we can send each other "do not waver" vibes)

Trying to decide which is a better stern face

NameChangingMancMidlander · 04/02/2005 11:22

I think is a better stern face.

Blu · 04/02/2005 11:23

And any more of that attitude and you're barred from logging on to Mn for a day!

RTKangaMummy · 04/02/2005 11:26

I would deffo not give treats if DS was being punished for something else

I am a cruel strict mum though

My sister always gives in to my nephews and they know it and just laugh at her

No means No in our house

an interesting point about truancy mum

On tv last night -
One of the comments by the daughter of the first woman sent to prison for daughters truancy, when asked did her mother not try to make her go to school was "yeah but she never means what she says"

lowcalCOD · 04/02/2005 11:27

yes think you hasve to be stern
aaaaah though

HeyEnidYouveLostWeight · 04/02/2005 11:28

What is he like normally? Was it a one off? I would let him go. But a strict talk given.

I only give out threats that I know I'll have no worries carrying through - toy removal being the most effective. dd1 is usually pretty good on the whole so I tend to make allowances for the odd tired strop.

NameChangingMancMidlander · 04/02/2005 11:29

I can see where soapbox is coming from though. Sometimes it is easier to crack and let them do whatever it is, watching them strop around the house is more of a punishment for me . The stropping, door slamming, 'I hate you' gurning faces, all just get soooooooooo much worse when they get older. DSs are 12.5 & 11 and are becoming masters at it.....

flashingnose · 04/02/2005 11:31

still shuddering formt he cat pic

NameChangingMancMidlander · 04/02/2005 11:37

Alas, DS1 has grown out of the 'big eyes' for sympathy stage. He is firmly into the 'frown and exude hatred of parent/s from every pore, so that they are left in no doubt that they have ruined your life forever' stage. Aren't teenagers lovely

soapbox · 04/02/2005 11:38

LOL flashingnose - yep that's the look that gets me every time!

Mixed in with the odd crumple every now and then with a stray tear or two dribbling down the face

lowcalCOD · 04/02/2005 11:41

( whispers fn cant he do a penance intead?
self flaggelation?

jampots · 04/02/2005 11:58

you need to get yourselves blue eyed children instead - its virtually impossible to do "big chocolate brown pleading eyes" - my kids just look steely and calculating which makes carrying out threats a pleasure

RTKangaMummy · 04/02/2005 12:02

lol jampot
