Potty training feels impossible

DD is two and I also have a 4 month old baby. I am keen to potty train because she seems ready and also has wee and poo leaks no matter what size or brand of nappy we try now.

I gave it a shot last week and I didn't last half a day. Wee everywhere, her jumping in "puddles" (thanks Peppa), baby crying because I'm busy cleaning up accidents and taking toddler to the toilet constantly.

She really likes sitting on the toilet or the potty, but she'll sit on there for half an hour and not do anything, but start crying if I suggest that we take a break and try again in a bit

Just so much stress and I'm also worried about wrecking our sofa and the carpets.

Do I just leave it and try again in a few months? I just really wanted to get it done. If I'm completely honest, a major factor is her poos are absolutely foul and gag-worthy.

How 'two' is she? Just two, two and a half, nearly three?

What signs was she showing of being 'ready'?

Can she be bribed i.e does she understand 'do a wee in the potty and you'll get a sweet/sticker/lots of praise'?

what preparation did you do? Have you been reading stories about using the toilet before attempting to train? You need to do a LOT of toilet talk before starting! She needs to see you going and understand what people are doing when they go to the toilet, both in homes and public spaces. As you have a baby, you can talk about how nappies are for babies but that she is a big girl who needs to
use the toilet.

no advice can just share my commiserations and support! We potty training when daughter was 2 years and 4 months. Honestly if I hadn’t told everyone we were potty training I would have given up. First day not one pee in potty aside when I rushed to put her on mid pee. Day two, one pee in potty but this appeared to be coincidence. Day 3 and 4 absolutely no progress lots of puddles and I had to give her nappy ( tucked into pants) to poo.
Seriously started to consider stopping but didn’t want to be back to start. Day 5 - something seemed to click
Really Great by day 7
Key for me was
-putting her on every 15 minutes - so she had more chance of peeing in potty/ chance of making the link

  • cancelling all plans ( aside from visiting my dads which was potty training friendly)
  • playing in garden ( nice to just have a break from worrying about my floors and sofa.

only thing I would suggest is only start if you have a good run of it - feel you have energy to really try.

I did son a while year later as it wasn’t ready till the.

I’d leave it a bit until she’s more ready? I was worried but my Ds is able to clearly communicate now about poos and weed at 2.5, he’s really excited about using the potty- I thought I would try to just do it over a few days but after pre school in the mornings we go nappy free for the afternoon at home, because it’s relaxed and on his terms he just runs over to the potty each time. I haven’t braved it out and about yet but he’s definitely becoming ready. Don’t stress- it won’t be long and it will just click for her.

DC1 trained at 22-24 months old. Fairly easy.

DC2 (and I had another newborn by this point so 3 kids in total!!) I tried at 2 and it just didn’t work. I tried at 2 y 4 months and sort of in between. In thr end she was 2 yr 6 months and that was the right age for her. I really thought if i tried hard enough i could do it at 2 but she just didn’t click until 2 y 6 months
