Adults are so boring (Halloween)

FierceFireFairy · Yesterday 17:15

So at a kids party for my sons football group, kids are 4-8 years old. Adults were encouraged to dress up so I've come as a cat, not one adult (apart from the coaches) have dressed up.
This is when I wish I was in America where everyone who does Halloween does it properly, the UK is so nervous about looking silly its so sad. I miss getting dressed up we used to do it every year in my 20's, all my friends are so boring now too.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I can think of nothing worse than getting dressed up to go to a party of any sort

I appreciate it has been celebrated in Scotland for centuries but the tacky commercial side and trick or treating is certainly American.

Still wrong, trick or treating didn’t start in America either.

PeatandDieselfan · Yesterday 21:01

I dunno, I think the answer is consumerism. The companies that mass produce the costumes everyone buys from the supermarket want to sell adult sizes too cos, you know, more money.

When I grew up in Scotland 30 - 40 years ago, Halloween was a really big deal, we all carved turnips (never saw a pumpkin in a shop in Scotland til I was in my 20s) and went guising (trick or treat was only in American movies). But only until we finished primary school! It was a kids thing, not an adults thing! I don't remember any adults getting dressed up, ever, just like there was no way anyone's parents would go guising with them. Also, we improvised the costumes, you couldn't get more than a mask, a hat and some face paint from the shop. And it didn't make money for anyone, relatively.

I've never in my life dressed up because I'm autistic and I don't like people looking at me. You don't know what people are going through op.

LeftBoobGoneRogue · Yesterday 21:17

I have no interest in Halloween., it’s become just another imported American commercialisation and bad for the environment. All that plastic tat. Whatever happened to Bonfire Night.

Rosesanddaffs · Yesterday 21:19

@FierceFireFairy I’m not boring 😂 I love dressing up, tomorrow I will be a bat 😂

I love Halloween xx

itsgettingatadchill · Yesterday 21:25

Ah thats a shame! We are organising a community event tomorrow night through a children and young people organisation we have a lot of adults volunteering on the stalls and we’re all dressing up.

EmmaB1309 · Yesterday 22:21

My daughter would die of embarassment!

BugJuice · Yesterday 22:24

I don’t give a shit about looking silly. Honestly couldn’t care less.
I have better things to spend my money on than a costume I’ll wear for one event, like food and heating.

durdledoris · Yesterday 22:26

I work in a primary school and absolutely hate dress up days. No way would l dress up for a kids' party.

Like me, it's too orange.

😂

It's true that orange is really not my colour. It makes my skin look yellow and blotchy. Black isn't that flattering either. I should dress up at Easter instead.

HeddaGarbled · Yesterday 22:39

It’s just buying single-use tat.

Sparklybutold · Yesterday 22:47

I don’t have the energy, certainly not at a kids party.

I mean, I love both, but this did make me spit out my coffee. Bonfire night is awful for the environment. And everyone being so busy is kind of proving the op's point. People take themselves very seriously these days, I'm thinking of the thread a couple of days back where everyone is far too busy at work to make polite chit chat while waiting for people to join a teams call. Fancy dress isn't everyone's bag, but at least own it.

Magnificentkitteh · Yesterday 23:02

You can reuse a witch's hat and wear stuff you already own. Or maybe it's just me that dresses like a witch from day to day and doesn't need to make much effort

Newname26 · Yesterday 23:04

Lots of people have neither the time to make some thing or the money to buy.

Harry12345 · Today 00:39

I love Halloween, decorate my house and will dress up for a party with friends. I don’t like the thought of walking through the street or being the only adult at the school dressed up as I don’t like attention so probably wouldn’t in the example you have given

Halloween is a horrible American event. Nobody should dress up adult or child and trick or treating should be banned.

No it isn’t! People keep saying this, it originated from Scotland/celtic culture and has always been a big deal here! Yeah people buy more shite but that’s the same for Easter and Xmas too.

Again that’s not true, it’s called guising here and has been going on for decades

Deadringer · Today 00:51

I hate when parents make Halloween all about them. I have worn costumes to parties for adults, but for kids parties and trick or treating, leave it to the kids ffs.

DevastatingFinish · Today 01:00

Dressing up I find drainingly boring. There’s a religious celebration we have, normally in March, that calls for dressing up and it drains all the joy from me. The thought of fancy dress makes me want to slither bonelessly to the floor and lie there until it’s all over.

I do love it when all the Druids turn up on a Halloween thread and become furious and start telling us all what’s what. A real Mumsnet tradition.

EveningSpread · Today 03:32

Not dressing up for Halloween doesn’t mean you’re a boring person.

In our household we have loads of silly fun all the time! I don’t have the time to source a Halloween outfit and don’t want to pay for one, but there are 365 days in the year to have fun.

But well done you for being so fun and exciting. Everyone else is so so boring.

PollyBell · Today 03:41

No we don't dress up, lots of reasons the main one is that voice some adults put on who do dress up when they talk to other adults like they are 2 'tsk so mummy/daddy are being naughty and not joining in'
No and you are the reason why, patronising adults does nothing positive

Nah cant be arsed and if that makes me boring bring it on

EveningSpread · Today 03:47

Was it a tight, “sexy” cat outfit you went to the kids party in, OP?

(There will be a million “sexy” zombie brides, fairies, nurses or witches trailing about tomorrow night. Pretending to be really fun and cool whilst also confirming to patriarchal beauty standards is, of course, tradition.

CheeryOP · Today 03:52

For parents with young children, few have the time and energy for dressing up
