Are we actually stockpiling food following govt announcement??

DH and I have a 4 year old, 2 year old and a 9 month old baby. I feel like this govt announcement to stockpile food is just media scaremongering and I’ve ignored it up until now, but tonight after I put our children to bed and turned out their lights out and the house was pitch black I did think to myself, god what if this was actually it and we were put into a blackout.

Im worried about having food to feed my children, and the thought of them going hungry is starting to worry me, but I also cannot bring myself to believe something will actually happen??

is anyone else stockpiling? What kind of things are you getting? Are we actually going to eat cold beans from a tin?

my husband and I were talking about it tonight, and wondering what the govt are hiding?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

So before this Labour government people were starving themselves because they forgot to stock up? I think the real reason is that they are expecting bond yields to spike after their Muppet Show of a budget and interest rates to start rising steadily thereafter, this is about juicing consumption before people really get fearful of spending.

Oh grow up. Most of the world has been given this advice for years, the UK is way behind the times.

Nearly50omg · 27/10/2026 06:27

you are going along with conning disabled people out of their seats so you are just as bad as your “friend” by waiting until it’s too late for anyone else to be able to buy your disabled seats

If the internet and phone networks go down you'll still be able to get government announcements.

Oh i see so we can be more brainwashed as they are going to bring us out of the apocalyptic crisis. Not

What event are we expecting that shuts down food deliveries?

Cyber attacks or systems outages? Food deliveries rely on supply chains and databases and all sorts.

@Ohcrap082024 where hasn't had running water in the UK? I am shocked

If you live in the south east its really really bad! Tunbridge Wells had a dire time over Christmas and the infrastructure is so poor that water outages are a regular and real issue. That's why it's interesting as people's priorities will really depend on your region - I'm less worried about snow drifts and more concerned about water. The water companies have been poor at providing water too and its a very real problem here x

All the chat is making me twitchy after media hype this week , however I just don’t have the energy for the stock rotation system that will now have to be in place for everyone doing their ‘apocalypse shop ‘ !!

If you can afford to, buy 3 days of tinned food and 8L water per person and keep it in a box somewhere. Make sure they don't expire within a year.

In 6 months time donate it to the foodbank once you've ordered replacements.

More expensive, but no rotation required

LilyBunch25 · 27/10/2026 08:16

The use of the word 'stockpiling' needs to stop for a start. The government advice is 3 days of supplies. Think power cuts (as recently occured) cyber issues, etc, affecting supply and stores.

If you've been reading about water shortages then you'd know the water companies are AWFUL at delivering water. Also a water outage caused by power outage/ bad weather. Don't really want to have to wander out to fetch some. It's all about being responsible for your own wellbeing too.

We have been affected by the water outages. Bottled water was delivered to our flat as we are registered as vulnerable. The other water for collection stations caused massive traffic jams, but the water was there. Outages have been a problem over the last year here.
i have cleansing wipes and dry shampoo in stock.

Wow. I lived down there years ago and we never had water outages then, even in bad storms.

Doesn’t happen during the storms, but during the dry hot weather, when water supplies are low. Tunbridge Wells has it really bad, but other parts of Kent were affected on and off. We’re still in a hosepipe ban, and last year the hosepipe ban went from summer until February.

Cantgetausername87 · 27/10/2026 08:43

Happens in dry hot weather / wet weather/ storms and beautiful not too hot not too cold days as the infrastructure is completely crumbling. In fact we're lucky to have water at all given most pipes are victorian! But that's a separate thread I feel. But certainly last year it was caused by the wrong chemicals ending up in the water and a pumping station breaking - so not necessary weather related. I'm glad people have had emergency water, supplied by SE water and many times they been slow to respond and support - this is available in OFWATS recent findings so not scaremongering!

PurpleLeather · 27/10/2026 08:57

To be fair, the Govt. have not hid anything, it’s all been there in plain sight for all to see, though their current scaremongering is excellent advice.

If they are actually telling you to stockpile, you should as they care not about you or I and the millions of rations they bought in several years ago quite plainly are for the personal they’ll use to control the situation when it kicks off, which it will, sadly. World War 3? For sure. Uprising? Definitely and unstable weather due to weather modification? - it’s happening right now and has been for quite a few years. Look up!

I don’t think 3 days is anywhere near enough, think 6-12 months, though far too many just carried on with life over the past six years thinking everything was honky dory when it was far from. And that was just the start. Those that started a preparedness mindset back in 2020 bought when food particularly was probably half the price it is now. No wonder the supermarkets are making billions in profit. They all are, all the corporations. Imagine life as you know it gone and buy what you need to survive. There won’t be a nuclear war, so don’t worry about that. But worry about no food, the water being turned off and …..well, I’ll stop there, too many still don’t want to see what’s plain to see. Water, food, heating, lighting etc.

I checked Amazon today for a wind up radio and they’ve almost tripled in price since the govt announcement 🙄

It’s only for three days, check out battery operated ones. Perhaps the wind up version is being focussed on but battery will last a few days

Same for food. We already have cupboards that are full so only added some water to Ocado order. Spent £10 extra as already have a battery radio.

But also don’t worry too much, maybe just water and a few tins if you don’t want to spend on a radio.

Legoandloldolls · 27/10/2026 09:35

If you have a car, the car radio will work well enough. Not ideal mid storm but I haven't had need to tune in as soon as power goes out. We normally just call the outage number to find out whats going on. I bought a usb radio speaker.

I was wondering why they have to be wind up rather than buying a battery one and a cheap pack of batteries from Poundland?

Is there a particular type of radio we should get, in terms of what wavelengths it picks up? I feel like I have heard of things like that. But I know nothing about radios generally, have never listened to one much. And I don't have a car,, so that's out for me .....

Yes I know. I think if you think people would let you sit and gorge on your stockpile without wanting some of the feast you just haven't seen hardship. Maybe you'll get lucky and live out your natural lifespan before it kicks in here (for it certainly will one day) and maybe you won't. But you don't have the skills to keep what you've "earned".

Good luck finding my stockpile. And you have zero idea what skills I or anyone else may have, before you try to take what YOU haven’t earned, but bizarrely think you are somehow entitled to.

This has been knowledge for quite a while but not mainstream. We got our supplies together about 2 months ago and we know others that have done so too. We’re prepared for far more than 3 days.

Me too. Almost daily alerts and that’s only for a section of my town.

Whosthetabbynow · 27/10/2026 15:36

It’s just a common sense suggestion plus don’t most people have about three days-worth of food anyway. It’s nothing sinister. It’s just making small provisions in case the banking systems are disrupted. It’s really not that deep.

72Kit · 27/10/2026 15:51

On the radio question: a battery one is absolutely fine, just keep spare batteries in the packet with it. Wind-up or solar only matters for a long outage, as you can't run out. Make sure it has FM, as that's where BBC local radio is, which is what gives you local news in an emergency. DAB is fine too but uses batteries faster. No need for anything fancy.

elainewilx · 27/10/2026 17:51

Stockpiling is one thing, having a plan is another. I spent years training communities in Northern California... and yes lots of people don't have the time / space / resources to buy too much extra food but you actually need to have a plan. It costs nothing, sit down with your family and discuss what would happen if... who would you call, do you even have peoples phone numbers written down somewhere or are they on your phone that could run out of power.... so much more to do than just buying beans :)
