Are we actually stockpiling food following govt announcement??

DH and I have a 4 year old, 2 year old and a 9 month old baby. I feel like this govt announcement to stockpile food is just media scaremongering and I’ve ignored it up until now, but tonight after I put our children to bed and turned out their lights out and the house was pitch black I did think to myself, god what if this was actually it and we were put into a blackout.

Im worried about having food to feed my children, and the thought of them going hungry is starting to worry me, but I also cannot bring myself to believe something will actually happen??

is anyone else stockpiling? What kind of things are you getting? Are we actually going to eat cold beans from a tin?

my husband and I were talking about it tonight, and wondering what the govt are hiding?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

All this about buying tins etc. first thing I’ll do if electrics go down is eat up what’s in my fridge and freezer. That’ll take three or more days. My priority is power bank, camping stove, water, candles, matches, batteries, windup radio. No point in dry pasta or rice if nothing to cook on.

Yes, I'm building a resilience store. There isn't one event to prepare for, and it isn't like the government knows something we don't.

This winter will see what the strongest El Nino ever recorded does to our weather. It will definitely bring storms, which are likely to bring power cuts and if the weather fucks things up in the countries we buy food from, that food won't be available to us. It isn't just short term power outages we need to think about. Stuff like tomatoes, coffee, pasta and rice may be in short supply.

The government is openly saying the country is at risk of attack from Russia. Our army is preparing for war. It was reported on BBC Breakfast just yesterday.

What that war looks like is anyone's guess. Traditional warfare? Cutting the cables of our internet connection? Blowing up gas pipelines? Hacking, like we are seeing already. They spoiled all the food in major supermarkets across France.

So yes, I'm stockpiling. Because I don't want to eat the chickpeas and beans in vinaigrette that have been in the back of my cupboard since time began.

I've bought tinned meals from M&S and Aldi - curries, bologneses. Lunch pouches and soups. Tinned fruit. I've frozen strong white flour and plain flour - it keeps forever - and yeast, and can make stove top breads with it. We've bought a load of butane for our camping stove. It's all stuff we'll eat, and now we've got it we'll rotate it.

We have jerry cans of water.

We've added to our camping lanterns, bought head torches and a wind up radio.

We're keeping the power bank charged.

In all honesty we should have done this sooner. We live fairly rurally and lose power LOADS. It's just luck that it's only ever been out for 12 hours overnight before. When you see how many people were without power this weekend just gone - this feels better.

bumblebee1000 · 27/10/2026 21:01

Not sure what all the fuss is about, we have items already in the cupboards and hoarder neighbour has 2 generators if we need to borrow one, if there is some sort of cyber attacks, am and fm radio signals wont work, you need short wave and we already have one of those from years ago !

So if you have no water supply, what do you plan to do? Dig a well?

Well the whole country wont be without water so I will just to nearest family or friends who still have running water.

ratatouillemousesqueak · 27/10/2026 21:16

It’s just good sense to have spare food for storms and snow/floods. The website has a list so look on there or ask AI to create you a checklist.

torches and food you don’t have to cook. Water in case that fails. Blankets in case no heat. Sanitiser in case you can’t wash. It’s really not hard.

Umbilicat · 27/10/2026 21:18

I'm shocked but not surprised at the number of people on this thread with no clue as to why the government might be warning us. Read a newspaper. Listen to a serious news outlet. You'll work it out.

alcovecupboards · 27/10/2026 21:34

We generally eat only fresh food so if it happened just after the weekly shop we'd be fine, but if it happened a day before it was due - that wouldn't be ideal. So I've popped a load of tinned salmon/veg/fruit/meat onto this week's Ocado order but quite a lot was out of stock. Costco has been manic too so I think a lot of people are following the guidance. One thing I'm considering now is putting solar on the house and having those huge batteries installed. A friend has them and isn't at all worried about power cuts because of it. She also turned half her garden into a mini-allotment and has a proper allotment so she's much more advanced than I am in this. Might put the teens to work and install some veg beds too at some point just in case.

There's clearly something significant going on. Information coming out of the US is that the military is prepping for 3 months of disruption. Im shocked that there are people still who haven't heard about it. It's literally been all over the news and social media. Im' making sure we have enough to last a good few weeks and viewing it like an insurance policy.

Just blame it on trans people and you'll have them forming queues outside their supermarkets before you know it!

I checked Amazon today for a wind up radio and they’ve almost tripled in price since the govt announcement 🙄

Don't bother, I've got a radio/CD player that takes C batteries, I bought it last year. Something like that is probably going to be cheaper.

The batteries would cost anarmanaleg, though!

I have been trying to stockpile Chocolate Smarties but it appears I can eat them faster than I can buy them.

I have concluded that it is due to their size, so I'm going to try stockpiling Malteasers.

Should that fail I shall move onto Chocolate Oranges.

(I have to say that this Government is coming out with some very sound advice.👏)

🤣

Grammarnut · 27/10/2026 22:28

I have never actually heard the government say have enough food for 3 days. I probably have enough but I don't think we are supposed to be stock-piling food. Might be better to find out who owns our electricity, gas and water and do something about that. A country needs to own its own infrastructure and produce as much of its food as possible.

Nonimity · 27/10/2026 22:32

3 days food and ‚stockpiling‘ are surely not the same thing.? Just make sure you have some food in to keep you going for a few days. Stockpiling to me is just inflammatory propaganda language.

cryupmykingdom · 27/10/2026 22:35

These questions are why I like MN.

WhyPig · 27/10/2026 22:37

We had our water cut off unexpectedly for about an hour once in which time my dc had a big nappy incident. Took several bottles of water to wash him properly and my hands - about half my 3 day supply 😅

Definitely buy more water than you think you will need, especially with small children!

RuinartRuination · 27/10/2026 22:44

Nah. I don't take any notice of this shower of incompetent fools. I did buy on extra jar of passata in this weeks delivery however. Not sure if it counts.

The military are preparing for something but not much information about exactly what it is yet as I understand it, I’m not American though so other might have more insight, it’s certainly got people talking though, Apparently this sort of exercise hasn’t happened before on this scale.

maybe it’s like one of those disaster movies and an asteroid/alien invasion/sudden ice age/cracks in the fault lines leading to lava erupting everywhere is imminent. We probably need someone like Will Smith to sort it out.

in all seriousness the Americans are crazy . If their military is preparing for three months of severe disruption then it’s probably a good idea to follow suit since the regime is so unstable that it could be planning anything,

Here's what UK gov say, and it is three days' worth of goods:

Kickinthenostalgia · 27/10/2026 23:03

The only thing I’m worried about is the water side because DS only drinks flavoured water so I’m hoping that doesn’t sell out on the back of plain water getting sold out. Otherwise, not really worried tbh. Got enough in the house to feed a small army.

Mumoftwo8519 · 27/10/2026 23:11

Update! Ive purchased a wind up radio, camping light and a battery pack which are being delivered this week (hold off apocalypse) - loathed to spend money on these, but they will all be used at some point or another.
Aldi only had small bottles of water, so picked up two small crates, some UHT milk and did a top up of tinned food. Ive put everything under the bed so it’s out the way.
I will get some bigger bottles of water when I see them in the supermarket and im just going to chance it with toilet roll because we have no where to store bulky items like that.

Have tried and failed! Teen age kids just seem to eat more when they see full to the brim cupboards! will have to put locks on some of the cupboards to keep them away from the food stash! We have tons of baked beans and loos rolls though in rhe event of supply chain problems.
I’m interested to know how in the past supermarkets put their orders in to suppliers. Prior to the internet age - presumably it was done by fax/phone calls - we would have to resort to this again in an emergency situation if the digital platforms have been hacked?

Can someone explain what a radio is for apart from listening to talk shows ?

@Mumoftwo8519 for Government announcements through your local radio or bbc radio. . Also have a list of emergency numbers on paper and stick onto your radio . If the uk goes dark wouldn’t you like to know why and an update. .

I haven’t read the thread but it’s annoying they haven’t said exactly what is they’re preparing for..tinned food is fine but are we also expecting to have no power to cook things with? Then the options dwindle to things that don’t have to be cooked.
Also annoyed me they said to include water needed for washing. Erm yeah that wont be at the top of my priorities.
I think with really young children as in your case, I would try not to worry as you have other things on your plate. I think people with young kids are used to prepping food/snacks anyway. I was just thinking how would I tell my 4 year old we only have cold beans to eat though.
I was shopping today and a lady mentioned she’d bought 75 bottles of water from Amazon, but the cashier said she hadn’t really noticed much bulk buying.
