Are we actually stockpiling food following govt announcement??

DH and I have a 4 year old, 2 year old and a 9 month old baby. I feel like this govt announcement to stockpile food is just media scaremongering and I’ve ignored it up until now, but tonight after I put our children to bed and turned out their lights out and the house was pitch black I did think to myself, god what if this was actually it and we were put into a blackout.

Im worried about having food to feed my children, and the thought of them going hungry is starting to worry me, but I also cannot bring myself to believe something will actually happen??

is anyone else stockpiling? What kind of things are you getting? Are we actually going to eat cold beans from a tin?

my husband and I were talking about it tonight, and wondering what the govt are hiding?

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Recently somewhere in thr south East they were without water due to some issue anyway the trucjed in wster to give to people. So unless there is going to be a nationwide water problem or national grid failure and the country is in a blackout I just fail to see the need to stockpile like crazy.

Although if I lived in a rural area and I mean super remote as some have mentioned on here that is a different story.

I've decided I'll just see who looks plump and complacent in the endtimes and take it from them 🙂‍↕️

You won’t be taking anything from anyone without a fight. Prepare now. You’ve been warned. Make preparations so that you can look after yourself (and family and pets). It’s your responsibility, not anyone else’s.

PickAChew · 26/10/2026 22:18

If all you can think of to eat in an emergency is cold beans, you have problems, already.

Yes, but this has been happening since supermarkets were invented and before that, why the sudden "emergency"? Is this all they are going to do, cut bus fares and tell people to "stockpile" in case things happen that have always happened?

I wouldn't be too surprised if that is indeed all they're going to do. I hadn't thought of it all in terms of a pending emergency so much as them simply telling us to be responsible for ourselves if anything happens.

If you don't open the freezer then mostly it stays fine up to about 2days with the power off - then you start a massive cook on the bbq or anything else working and invite the neighbours for a garden meal around a fire pit.....and yes we have actually done this!

Yes, in winter it would be fine for a couple of days, good point, but if all the neighbours had also stocked up without a secondary power source it would be one helluva garden meal!

mybiggreenfrog · 26/10/2026 22:20

No

BluebellBeth · 26/10/2026 22:23

The last two times we've had power cuts the mobile data hasn't been working on anyone's phones either. I can't work out why this is as usually we can still connect. It's hammered home how we definitely need a radio.

Mumoftwo8519 · 26/10/2026 22:23

Thanks all, I had a much needed chuckle at some of these comments.
perspective is definitely important Ive come to realise. Never really thought about the 20 somethings who live off deliveroo and have a half eaten tub of hummus in the fridge. Im definitely a bit better stocked than they are.

feeling better about calling it winter ready, so will pop to the shop tomorrow to stock up on basic supplies like UHT milk, water, and pick up a few extra tinned foods. I really don’t like waste so trying to be very sensible.
we’re a family of five so we do always have a fairly stocked pantry, but will just make sure we are well stocked. We have a gas stove so hoping we’d be able to use gas anyway, otherwise it’s a pan on top of the wood burner 😬
some useful bits I hadn’t thought of as well.

I live right in the middle of England so not expecting any major weather mishaps. My concern is cyber attacks shutting down major energy/ water infrastructure but here’s hoping we don’t get to that 🙈

I checked Amazon today for a wind up radio and they’ve almost tripled in price since the govt announcement 🙄

Not stockpiling, as such but I will assess my cupboard to see if there’s anything I can replenish. I usually get some long life milk in over winter anyway. The only thing the recent announcements made me consider is dog food which I hadn’t really thought about, so I’ll order sooner rather than later going forward.

Those who are, what food are you putting in your apocalypse cupboard?

If you've been reading about water shortages then you'd know the water companies are AWFUL at delivering water. Also a water outage caused by power outage/ bad weather. Don't really want to have to wander out to fetch some. It's all about being responsible for your own wellbeing too.

We don't stock pile the freezer neither do the neighbours but we usually have meat in the freezer along with some batch sauces. We cooked the meats and a pan works well on a bbq for heating up sauces and cooked some pasta.
We still lost quite a bit from the freezer but it was things like pies, chips etc.

😂 and yes it was quite a garden party there wasn't anything else to do as us and many neighbours work locations were also shut/had no power.

Communities here though rally pretty quickly, those who still have cooking options make soup, boil water for flasks and if we still have phones working then messages go out. If we don't then we knock on doors to check on vulnerable neighbours 🙂
Like I say its pretty common for disruption between Oct - March at some point.

Yes I know. I think if you think people would let you sit and gorge on your stockpile without wanting some of the feast you just haven't seen hardship. Maybe you'll get lucky and live out your natural lifespan before it kicks in here (for it certainly will one day) and maybe you won't. But you don't have the skills to keep what you've "earned".

No-one asks you to "stockpile like crazy".

The ask is to have a few basics, so in case of a bigger blackout or other bad event the govenment agencies can focus on fixing stuff and taking care of the very vulnerable, not on assisting you.

A few bottles of water per person, so you have something to drink until the emergency supply is delivered (which could take a bit linger if bigger area is affected). Some basic food which would work with minimal preparation, so you won't be hungry (until the system is re-established).

Get some unplugged light source, radio and a bit of cash, so you can operate to some extent.

--
For families it can be about having some UHT milk in case the fresh isn't available, something comforting, and something easy to prepare. You can survive without, but it would make waiting with children a bit nicer.

Just a few small things which would mean that you would be more or less fine if something happened at a wider area, so it would take longer to deal with it.

DewDropsAndCobWebs · 26/10/2026 22:36

Protein: beans, pulses, legumes, dried eggs, nuts, seeds, high protein shakes, high protein noodles, beef jerky, tvp, tinned tuna, tinned salmon, sardines and mackerel
Fibre: dried fruits and vegetables, fruit bars
Fats: ghee (shelf stable, lactose free, super high cook point)
Carbs: crackers, rice cakes, granola bars, rice, pasta, baking ingredients

Also good to have: extra garbage bags (if things go south garbage pick up is one of the first things to be impacted)
Meal replacement drinks
A week of extra meds
Five gallons of water that gets rotated regularly
Paper plates and wooden disposable cutlery (if power is cut and heated water is at a premium, I'm not wasting it washing dishes)
Extra pet food and shitty litter

This. And I truly believe it is for small scale stuff. Water or powers gone (both is power goes first.) There's an amber weather warning. So instead of having to go out and fetch water for example, you're inside warm(ish) and able to let the crews fix the power/ burst main/ get pumps back online. You're not out in a storm in a car crash/ needing to go to hospital because you haven't had to go anywhere. Honestly I'd never paid much notice but it really really is common sense x

mamaof4losingmymind · 26/10/2026 22:38

You don't need to stockpile but at the same time your cupboards shouldn't ever be empty. The government is only having to make this announcement because people are stupid. You see it on here my dd has got a contagious illness we live in the middle of nowhere and nobody delivers and we have no family or friends so is it ok to take her to tesco.

Deadringer · 26/10/2026 22:39

Not stockpiling exactly, but I bought some bottled water for the first time, and I have bougth extra pasta, sauces and toilet rolls.

So before this Labour government people were starving themselves because they forgot to stock up? I think the real reason is that they are expecting bond yields to spike after their Muppet Show of a budget and interest rates to start rising steadily thereafter, this is about juicing consumption before people really get fearful of spending.

suburberphobe · 26/10/2026 22:48

Some bits you can get are inexpensive. I don't have a garden and electric only but have bought extra bits to make it less miserable - long life milk, jam, cereal bars (on offer) and crackers etc. Just enough little bits that don't need cooking x
