Y7 and video chats

Hi I am wondering how other parents are handling the use of phones by y7 children. Our daughter has a smart phone since starting secondary school, no social media, no safari, no youtube. Basically just for calls, spotify, google maps and communicating with friends. We allowed whatsup to keep in touch.

she has started secondary in a completely different part of the country due to our move. Didn’t know anyone but settling in ok. What bothers me is that she is on vid calls with best friends from primary pretty much all afternoons after school. No problem with homework, all done on time. She still enjoys some family time, trips etc but apart from that it is just chatting to friends. Is this normal? Do you limit such things? Am i exaggerating? Times were different when I was her age, I was just outside with friends all the time.

just wondering about your experiences
thanks

DD was like this in year 6 (now year 7, at a different high school to her primary friends). We had issues with her phone usage and trust over the summer which resulted in us confiscating her phone for 2 weeks, and then limiting her WhatsApp to 15mins/day. This has completely curbed the video calls she was doing in the summer, along with removing her from a friendship group that I was uneasy about.
