Baby lung problems

My 6 month old developed a pneumothorax 30 mins an after he was born. He was in hospital for 2 days on oxygen while it recovered and antibiotics to cover him incase.

Last week I had to call the ambulance and when they arrived his oxygen was at 85%. After 5 days in hospital, the verdict was focal consoldation and collapse lung in both. He had a course of 7 days of anti biotics. It came back as rhinoenterovirus.

After 2 episodes of lung related emergencies, I’m a nervous wreck and wondering what is going on. The doctors all say something different so I’ve no idea what to do apart from sit it out and wait for it to happen again.

anyone had a similar situation?

That's all very frightening and stressful.

Are you under any consultant care at all?

It can help to ask specific questions:

  • are these two events connected or unconnected?
  • is there any underlying cause suspected?
  • is my child considered to have higher risk of future lung issues?
  • do I need to do anything specific to help prevent recurrence?

After hospital admission you should get some info and a letter should go to your GP I think.

You can ask PALS to help you access information.

Asthma + Lung charity might help, they have a helpline.

No, not under any care. The hospital will yes send everything that’s happened to the doctors but in terms of everything further that’s it. So, im going to book a doctors appointment to talk about it. But I fear I know how it will go. “Just keep an eye on it” “if he is under the weather bring him here straight away”. But maybe it’s all can hope for. I don’t know.

I just feel the hospital should have been able to answer some of those questions but they didn’t. They are seperate incidents I suppose. But some people at the hospital say it could be due to what happened when he was born and others say could just be seperate incidents and bad luck.

Im just wondered there is some structural office with his lungs. To get a consultant referral in the uk is going to be hard work!!
