Dh using the lounge tv for gaming

We have a 10 year old who stays up until 9 on school nights and 10 weekends.
She likes to sit with us in the evening but Dh used the lounge tv for gaming.
She does have a tv in her room but doesn’t want to spend her evenings in her room and her younger sister is in bed at 7 and they share a room.
She gets bored and wants to watch tv but Dh wants to game.
I don’t think this is fair as the kids get older and stay up later.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

A lounge should be communal so ALL the family gather there if they choose

He is being an absolutely selfish arse.

Im so glad my childhood was in the 70s. I must have watched hundreds of hours of the best British comedy ever made.
Are you Being Served? The Two Ronnies, (four candles) Porridge, Rising Damp, the Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin, "Sorry Im late, escaped cheetah on the railway line at Chessington North".
The Good Life, Dave Allen, "May your god go with you." And so many carry on films. "I dont suppose you would call me a mere chit of a girl?"
I pity children nowadays, war, drought, global warming, adults telling you its possible to be born in the wrong body and no one to make you laugh like Hattie Jacques and Ronnie Barker.
My dad also made me watch Rooster Cogburn and the Italian Job, "prisons are supposed to keep people out as well as keep people in governor ". A scene acted by John Le Mes and Noel Coward, so perfect it should have its own blue plaque. I would have missed all this if I was a kid today.

Anyone monopolising the TV is not on. Fine to have fire a bit, fine to watch cartoons for a bit but if you're wanting to watch TV together then it needs to be a chosen program suitable for all.

Of course dh could get a gaming set up in your bedroom .

But bloody hell what about spending time with his kids? The answer is not her games in the bedroom so night whilst you bring up the kids.

He's obviously not a good partner or parent.

Are there tvs elsewhere in the house he could game on?

LowlandLucky · 18/10/2026 11:36

Not only does he hog the tv playing games like a child but he ignores his child and is letting you do all the parenting. I could not live with such a pathetic self centred twat.

gamerchick · 18/10/2026 11:38

I'm idily curious to see many parents are on this thread ignoring their kids right now tbh.

gaming is my hobby. Would you say that to a reader? A hobby is a hobby

Reading is not normally accompanied by loud electronic noise. To say nothing of the shouting and swearing that some gamers seem unable to control.

Aussiesgettingsmashed · 18/10/2026 11:52

How can you have a 10 year old child when your husband is clearly a 13 year old boy. Playing video games indeed. Tell him you’ll buy him some crayons and Batman pyjamas if you and the kids can watch telly.

Having the television on is going to come with electronic noise - so you can’t be against gaming and not against TV too.

And not everyone shouts and swears when gaming.

I have been known to gasp or swear when I read.

I’d hate to live in a home where I was only allowed a hobby that was silent.

mindutopia · 18/10/2026 12:03

I have lots of hobbies I’d rather be doing than looking after my children on a weeknight evening, but being a parent means that your kids come first most of the time.

Surely, he can game one or two nights a week while you and dd go out and do something else. Otherwise, he needs to work harder, earn better, and then he too can have two reception rooms or a home office with two TVs. 🙄

Weird, every gamer I know (and I know a few) play through a headset so there is no sound coming from the tv I don't shout and swear either.

Unlike being around people watching football on TV.

Dandeloosha · 18/10/2026 12:05

He needs to do it elsewhere. The living room is communal space and gaming is an individual and antisocial hobby - one that most people prefer to do alone in a quiet space. Can he not do it on your bedroom?

gamerchick · 18/10/2026 12:06

I think the problem here is people are focusing on what he's doing. It doesn't matter what the hobby is, it's being selfish while doing it. He's being selfish by taking up a communal space for just him. There are ways around it so everyone is happy.

Im more surprised on the timing of the bedtime for the ten year old. What time do they get up? They still need to be in bed 12 hours ideally. It’s so late to be going up bed. My ten year old still went up at 7. Had a bath and chilled with books in bed. Bed by 8 at this age is still totally reasonable.

No they don’t 9 hours is enough, if my children were in bed at 7 at that age they would have been up at 4am and we would have had no life for years

JustFrustrated · 18/10/2026 12:08

gamerchick · 18/10/2026 11:05

Heh indeed. Always makes me laugh.

There's so few things people can really get their teeth into slagging off these days. Hobbies that take adults away from families for full days is more acceptable to one in the house close by.

I feel sorry for the uptight buggers personally. Grin

Ah because it’s a class thing.

gaming = lower class, poorly educated, no standards

”all day hobby” eg golf/cycling/hiking is the opposite.

so allowed and worthy apparently.

personally, I think as long as it’s a nice mix of family/own time then the hobby doesn’t matter.
edited to add: I don’t think gaming is lower class at all. It just appears to be the way the MN elite think

The point is do you make everyone sit and watch you do your hobby which would not allow others to have tv time as a family?

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 18/10/2026 12:10

Imagine a grown adult monopolising the family to play games (huge ick) whilst telling a child they’ve had enough screen time on their phone.

is this guy an idiot? Why do you put up with that @turquoiseshone did you have to sit and watch him gaming while the kids were in bed prior to this?

Ok to monopolise the communal space in the family home to do this yes, so that other people are excluded from normal enjoyment of their home?

*edited to say have read your subsequent post on this @gamerchick apols

Seajaye · 18/10/2026 12:14

If your husband is unable to grow up I think you need to get another gaming monitor for yourhusband to use. He is being I reasonable toonoplisr the family TV for his own use to the detriment of family viewing.

Koriko · 18/10/2026 12:15

If you've got the space he needs his own gaming room, the idea of the family gathering while dad works his way up in GTA is quite funny. Agree gaming is no worse or better than any other hobby, but unless your hobby is obscure French films from the 1970s it rarely occupies a TV set other people might like access to.

She’s defending gaming not this man’s actions. Because everyone is piling on gaming as a disgusting hobby when clearly there are some women on here that enjoy it and manage to be fully functioning members of society somehow

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 18/10/2026 12:16

@JustFrustrated an “all day middle class hobby” as you describe, such as golf/cycling etc doesn’t prevent people from using their own home in a normal fashion, or subject them to observing some man child playing games on the family telly all evening.

Yes, it's very strange to want your AL revolving around someone who rows or cycles and makes it their whole identity. But it's acceptable. It's very strange.

Theres the stereotype of gamers going around killing things, everything is a shoot em up playing against kids, shouting into the telly and smashing controllers. People don't see the other side of what's available. Especially in VR. Traveling the planet and seeing famous places from your own house, the town you grew up on fishing in famous fishing spots etc.

Gaming is a whole world of stuff and personally I think people miss out because of some weird belief it's low than.

Thank you. That's what I'm doing, because these threads always go the same way. I've said repeatedly that this is just another selfish adult taking up a space meant for everyone.

Anyway OP. Hope you come to a solution.
