Hi all- is 6 am wake up for my 2.5 year old normal? My friend yesterday was complaining to me that her son woke her up at 6.50 and I was like uggghh! That’s a lie in for me- don’t complain!! Just feel like I’m the only one who has a son who wakes at 6. He sleeps from 8-6 but recently has been waking up at 2 am and needs settling back. Have a little one on the way too so I guess I’m feeling like how on earth will I cope! Any support would be appreciated x

That's a very normal time for young children. He may or may not always get an early riser. 6 isn't really that early, I'm awake now getting ready for work.

Just to add to the above my son woke at 5.40 am today! 😭 I just don’t know why he is such a rubbish sleeper

My 2 were always early risers and 6am was the norm in our house when they were little.

Normal.
When a little older uou can give him.ideas of how to quietly be awake without waking others until the clock says. 6:30 or 7:00 or whatever.

itwasntme2019 · 14/10/2026 06:21

Completely normal, my little one was like this at this age, didn’t sleep through, awake between 5-6. Since he was about 6 he sleeps in until 7 now, later on a weekend. Hang in there!

FlatCatYellowMat · 14/10/2026 06:22

Completely normal for my eldest. Life-long early riser (16 now).

Not so much for the younger one :)

PippetyPoppetyPie · 14/10/2026 06:22

Mine are regularly up between 5.30 and 6. They are 3 and 7. My oldest one is 12 and I don’t usually see him on a school morning before 7.30. At the weekend probably 10! So it does get better with time. Some kids are just early risers

Normal in our house hold. Oldest.nearly always woke 5am-6am. Teenager now and still frequently wakes at.this.time. at 2.5.was.asleep.between.7pm.and.8pm.

Youngest.uses to sleep in a bit (7-8) but has been 6-7am wake.up.since 5.

It's tough when they are very little but when they are a bit.older you.can.teach them.about playing quietly in their room.etc....

We did have rules about screens not going on before a certain time/ going.downstairs.

If the very early wake.up.keeps.happening, might be worth considering if little.one.is.hungry. our eldest went through a phase of waking because they were hungry. I kept a few crackers in a box upstairs for a while and would offer a couple.with water.and then resettle them.if.it was too early to start the day.

Normal. My 14 yo has always woken at 6 and still does. Get used to it😀

wouldyouactuallydothat · 14/10/2026 06:47

Sympathies OP. It is normal. It’s also completely shit! I haaaate it. My DD is still asleep but that’s unusual. I’ve normally been up an hour by this time. It’s the one time she gets to go on my iPad (and I’m normally very anti devices with children) because I am not actively parenting at that time!

LastNightMyPJsSavedMyLife · 14/10/2026 06:55

He’s not a rubbish sleeper Op. Far from it. If he sleeps 8 until 6 he’s a great sleeper.

SnapAndTap · 14/10/2026 07:00

He sleeps 8-6 (10 hours), with sometimes a 2am wake? That's brilliant sleeping.

You've got another on their way, so presumably a second adult around. Spread out the 6am starts - and when baby arrives, look at ensuring both of you can get a chunk of sleep each night.

It will he fine. You, and toddler, are doing great.

AutumnHere4721 · 14/10/2026 07:15

Mine wakes around 7-7.30am but he goes to bed at 9-9.30pm. Basically 10 hours of sleep at night is all he needs. But then he takes 2 hour nap at lunch.

Sounds like he's a great sleeper.

I do know someone who has an amazing sleeper with very high sleep needs. Her baby is 3 and has slept 12 hours a night uninterrupted since 3 months old. She did do some hardcore sleep training to be fair. But she is the only one I know like that. Her parenting experience is totally different to mine.

6am household here too, DS6 has always been close to 6am waker (or earlier when little) he's started sleeping a little later since now but only in last few months.

DD is 18 months and is always up around 6am, our alarms go off at 6.15 so for us we dont mind being up and are used to it and most kids similar ages wake up around 6am time too.

Greendiamondbee · 14/10/2026 15:05

5am was the norm for my children, until they turned 6ish.

staybyyou · 14/10/2026 15:06

Mine is 8 and still wakes up between 5-6am everyday. Luckily he’s old enough to read/draw/not wake me up until his alarm clock goes off.
