ADHD 7yr old - worried to start meds

Hi,

my7yr old was diognosed a few months ago, he’s not medication yet but due to school issues and him regulating himself I’m thinking it might be the best option I’m worried his impulsiveness is affecting school and even friendships.

ill be honest though I’m so worried about mediation, he’s already tiny so I’m worried about weight loss, his sleep has always been great and I’m worried the medication will affect him and ruin his sleep , also worried about needing to go through so may different ones and how he will feel while taking meds.

just want some support/stories of others in the same situation.

thanks

I understand your worries as I had the same when my DC started on the med. I only gave it a few days each week (the most academic ones and not pe) so not every day and not on holidays or weekends. I felt like that was the best of both worlds. I don’t think they were over keen at the clinic, but I didn’t want to put him on it every day when it was only to help him focus at school.

Having said that, a boy from primary school was on a high dose every day for years and he was the tallest in the class!

Ok thanks was this Ritalin ? The physiologist also mentioned this one and that we can give Monday to Friday so the weekend he dosnt need.

he’s relatively good at home but after a day of masking at school we can have hard times. I’m worried about the impulsiveness and the trouble it gets him into, did you find that medication helped your child ?

The honest answer is I’m not sure, however my DC has learning difficulties too so no amount of extra concentration and focus is going to help then with their reading writing and maths as they struggle so much and are significantly behind. That’s why I’m reluctant to give it more as there isn’t a benchmark to show it is if that makes sense? It’s called Equasym so I have a feeling it’s under the same umbrella.

When he does have it though his appetite is still there and he still sleeps the same. Hopefully someone else will be along soon to share their experiences and give you more info. It’s so hard wondering what to do for your little one.
